Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

hey, I know I don't add much here..I still can't get pic up loaded of my two pullets...but did you see Greenfire isn't no longer selling Basque hens? Said not much interest here in the states...I keep ordering and then just knew it was over my budget for the month so I never pushed the order button and I checked last night and no Basque Hens..

Guess we have to create some interest.

I just put 3 cockerels in the freezer, a white one with an attitude problem, 1 with no tail and an attitude problem, and one really nicely marked one with a crooked leg. I am looking forward to seeing how they taste.

I'm not sure if it is lack of interest, or if a bunch of people now have these birds in the states and they can't get people to spend as much for them. I know Greenfire carries quality birds, but so do many people on the forum.

I have two Basque in the freezer now, but we did not process them ourselves, so I'll never know if I am eating a Basque, or one of the 5 olive-eggers. All I know is that I still highly recommend ronott's Basque recipe! (you can find it if you search recipe in the thread).

My Basque are getting close to laying. I thought one had started, at first. We have bucket nest boxes, and I'd been collecting an olive egg now and then. This weekend, I saw a hen acting strangely over in the corner behind their sand box. Upon investigating, I found a clutch of 5 eggs, including a brown one. But that day, one of the olive-eggers with a straight comb laid an identical brown egg. I put a new box right in the area of their clutch, and it has become a popular place. Strangely, the undersized, oddly shaped pullet I have with the tiny comb has been sitting the most. No egg yet though.

One day a gorilla walked into the Greenfire Saloon, bellied up to the bar and "Gimme a beer!" The Barkkeep drew him a tall one and said "That'll be $100!"

The gorilla Said "WHAT?!"

The barkeep said "Yep, $100."

The gorilla sighed and paid him, and took a sip of his beer. After a few moments the barkeep spoke. "You know, we don't get many gorillas in here."

The gorilla replied... "Well I reckon not! Not at $100 for a beer!"

...........and then the Gorilla went home and drank some of his own beer at a reasonable price and sang..three-six- nine...the Goose drank wine.....the monkey spit tobacco on the street car line...Clap....Clap

X 2!

Methinks the very folks these birds are most suited for are not very likely to pay 19 simoleons for an unsexed chick

It just goes against the grain.

And it goes to show what those folks are most interested in despite all that flowery talk about saving breeds.
It's green, it folds and it don't cluck.

I too have been thinking about Greenfire and the not much interest post. I think Skyline did them in. There is a lot of interest here in Northern CA. The heat was brutal here this summer and the EO Basque did very well in it.

Prices drop on Greenfire as each breed becomes more popular. The price of Cream Legbars has already come down. They will probably stop carrying them next year when My Pet Chicken starts selling them. I wonder what the price will be from them.

I like buckabucka's Pressure Cooker version of the Basque Chicken recipe. I cooked a 7 month old Delaware using the recipe and a pressure cooker. It was great!
