Euskal Oiloa ( Basque Thread)

I have a girl that went broody a couple of months after she started laying. I let her sit on 8 eggs. One got stepped on and 7 hatched. She has been a great mom. They are 9 weeks old and she is still protective of them. I only have one pure EO from that hatch and she is beautiful.

I just put two EEs under my Broody EO. They are under her now and when I checked she pecked at me a bit.

So far so good. he is a pullet that has been laying for a couple of months. She is one of the Easter Hatchalong chicks.

I have had many broodies and a few I let raise babies. They have all been fabulous Moms. We just butchered 26 Euskal Oiloa Roos this weekend and they averaged 4-5 lbs at 20- 25 weeks. I roasted two and the meat was perfect! Tender and full of flavour. Not tough and not.... Squishy like grocery store Frankenchicken

Wow! They sound like an all around great bird for someone trying to be a little more self sufficient on two acres in the country. I am glad to hear that not only are they great layers, they do go broody and are attentive moms. So often that is not the case.

Thanks, everyone, for your answers.

Ron, we exchanged e-mails many months ago. I'm glad the Basques have turned out to be such wonderful birds. (Broody in November! Again -- Wow!)

Hi Pat!

Too bad you weren't able to get my extras last Summer. You would really like them.

Hi Ron,

Yes, unfortunately, I was "over my limit." The henhouse is still too full.
But come spring... I have some grow out pens that can be used!

You have no idea how big my smile was when you reported that yours go broody.
I just love it when I can leave the hatching and raising of chicks to Mama.
They do so well and I don't have endless chicken dust to clean up in the house.

I hope you're getting some of this rain.

Pat

I would love to get a start of these. Does anyone have hatching eggs at a good price?

Hi woody
Not sure if anyone responded to you. In the US, Skyline Poultry has hatching eggs. A few others might have some too. They are pretty new to the US, so I'm not sure of the quality of others. I got mine from Skyline.

They are lots of fun.

I hope to get some EO's next Spring. Right now I have too many chickens (Jaerhons, production reds, EE's and a few others - I like them all) and we can't eat all the eggs so some of our new laying pullets will go up on Craigslist. The EO's sound like such the perfect farm free ranging chicken. I'm thinking about standardizing on mainly that breed. Seem so perfect, lay a lot of eggs, don't eat too much, great foragers, broody and raise their own chicks, extra roosters good for the table, very friendly birds... what else is there?

As side note, I noticed a couple of you from Northern California. I was born in Woodland and grew up in Orland!

Jerry
