Evacuation plans

last night an ugly truth about where I live reared its head. I was very VERY near to a wildfire evacuation zone, and although we didn't have to go, a shift in the wind could have changed that in an instant.

As we considered the possibilities and our options, it became apparent we did not have a way to save and transport our chickens. (Much less have a place to take them, but that's a separate problem.)

Has anyone had to deal with the possibility of having to leave your chickens behind? Short of getting a trailer, how do you transport a couple dozens chickens?

I don't think leaving them behind is good. If you were ever in that circumstance, I think the right thing to do is cull, better than being suffocated by smoke or fire.

How large are your chickens? If they are bantams you could probably find some sort of crates and you might be able to fit them all in a car... but if they are large fowl I don't think you would have enough room, unless you have a pick-up truck, then maybe.

Thanks for the response. Right now they are still young and relatively small, so I could probably pack them up if needed, but moving forward I just need to have a plan that can be executed quickly, at any time. I'll have to fashion a chicken topper for the bed of my truck LOL
