My PR just started laying a couple of weeks ago and I have noticed in the last week she will have one normal or huge egg, then the next egg is soft mushy or big egg, soft egg then small hard shell egg.

Why would this be? Can anyone tell me if it's normal or if she might always have problems?

Thanks!

Does she have oyster shell available? It takes a lot of calcium to make an egg shell and this sounds like a problem where she doesn't have enough calcium in her diet to form the shells. Fortunately, the solution is easy and cheap - a container of oyster shell left for her to eat free choice, should make all the difference in the world. Oyster Shell should be available wherever you buy your chicken feed.

she has oyster shells I mix in with feed and have in a small container with just oyster shells. My Red Star lays every day and there's never a problem with her shells. The feed I got l recently from our local co op has extra protein and calcium because I was worried and my PR is so much bigger (like double) than my RS I assumed she might need more protein and calcium that it could help. I'm just confused.

My hen did that for a while when she was first laying. Same diet all the time. After a soft egg or two she would have a big old double yoke egg. She got over it in a few days. Now she is not laying for a week at a time, not sure what that is all about.
