Everyone asks this question- WHEN WILL MY HENS START LAYIN!?

Great advice!! I wasn't sure what people meant by squatting, now I do. They are a bit skittish- The EE's mostly cause panic, so I'll need to lure them in with a nice chunk of fish to check their pelvic bones. Which would be good to look them over anyway.

And those combs- They are like mood hats- Changing with everything that happens. . . :)

Thanks for the advice- I am going to prepare their coop for a few days of confinement!!

Easiest time to check pelvic points are getting them off the roost at night, much easier to catch then ;-)
Just keep their wings pinned and stay calm.

I have jersey Giants, Rhode Island reds and dotte rocks

Depending on the breed, 5 and a half months old and not laying is not uncommon at all. As stated in other posts, pullets that mature in the fall can take longer than 'normal' to start laying. Most pullets that mature in the spring/summer will start laying somewhere between 18 and 25 weeks. Those that mature in the fall might not lay until they are well over 6 months old.

I have 5 black astrolorp girls that are about 6 1/2 months and I only get 2 eggs a week from them . However my 5 white leghorn girls are all laying daily at same age. I also have 8 production reds that lay daily. They are easter girls. It all depends on the individual bird.

It's more likely that they just aren't ready yet. Are your boys chasing those girls around constantly and causing them stress?

My big boy is really good to the hens. They get along very well- i think he hes more hen like than they are!! He is the one sitting in the nest box all the time and never crows!

One of the rooster does but the other 2 not so much! The one rooster will get the one that chases them and run him off lol
