We've officially renamed them Pip, as it's a name that'll stick either way. They only crow occasionally, and are pretty quiet when they do crow. Sooooo, we are waiting to see if they decide to lay eggs or not before we definitively rehome.

Interesting sidebar: we got this chicken along with another from the "breeders choice" bin at Bomgaars. The other chick grew up to look similar, but much more definitively a hen:

At 16 weeks, in those pictures it looks to me like a very definite female (color pattern, feather shape, comb size/color. Even though a hen-feathered male could have the color and feathers, the comb should be looking different by this age if it was a male).

Of course crowing is much more common in males of that age than in females of that age, but I think it most likely is a crowing female.

I'll definitely still be watching to learn if it lays eggs!

So that was my thought, actually! I had a home lined up and then "chickened" out, because I thought I'd see more definitive rooster traits by now.

I'll definitely keep everyone posted! I'm wondering if it's a pullet if I'll get pretty green eggs too!

I've posted this chick a couple times, but so far no one can identify if this is a cockerel or pullet. Votes are consistently 50/50

This is a 10 week old Easter Egger. The brown on the shoulders is the same color on the chest. Single row of peas on the comb. There appears to be saddle feathers, but they are rounded and have been there since 6 weeks old. Has hen posture 95% of the time. Will duck down when challenged by other pullets. Has zero rooster attitude. Has not crowed, when other chicks from this group have already. Neck feathers are also rounded.


Any thoughts? I tried to include as MANY photos as I could.
