Eww..yuck....ANOTHER NEW PIC !

NO reason for you to feel like an idiot - how would you know? You should call the drs. office - they ought to be able to tell you via phone how often you should be changing it.

Okay, it HAS to hurt when it's pulled out and then shoved back in, right? Also - when is the sac removal scheduled for, or is it not taking place until he's all done oozing?

Yes! Change it! Twice, three times a day. doesnt matter!!!
If it feels better to change it 10 times a day, do it! All that gauze is doing is soaking up that infection. the sooner its out, the better he will feel!
Good doctoring is mostly common sense. Yes, degrees do help, that way you know that they know the medicines and causes of most situations. But, being able to take care of yourself and others, relies totally on having a brain you can use that gives you good common sense!

Skand, Lunachick's an intelligent woman...and sometimes, you are instructed to NOT change dressings for so long of a period. I'm sure she's just being cautious. She was not instructed to change them twice a day (or more), so she was just doing what she was....was not....told.

When I had my cyst lanced, the doctor never told me whether or not I could change mine out, get it wet or anything, just said, see ya in a week. If it wasnt for the common sense, I would have had my gauze down the drain (when it got wet, it fell out) I told the doctor what happened, It was his oversight of not telling me. Sometimes, they figure we should know these things, they are so busy repeating the same info daily, they forget who they have and havent told. Sometimes, they forget a whole paper's worth of info, that is dearly needed. I wasnt implying she wasnt intelligent, I was just relaying what I have personally been through, and what I've found to be good info. Just like everyone else. No where near implying the doctors dont know, or anything of the sort.
Ive had to shove 5 foot of gauze with a wooden sticked swab, in my Neither regions. I know what a relief that gauze being pulled out feels like! I know the pain of shoving it back in is like. But, to heal quickly, without reinfecting the area, it should be changed more then once daily.

I bet it DOES feel good getting it out...like scratching an itch that you can't reach or something? I'm just guessing...

Husband had a spider bite while he was on the boat at work and didn't get off the boat for about 3 wks. after being bitten. By that time it was quite nasty and had to be surgically removed, leaving a somewhat bigger than golf ball sized hole. I was instructed to pack it with saline soaked gauze, and change the packing 2X each day. It is important to make sure it's healing from inside out. If you see any green or yellowish tissue, it's NOT finished healing! I hope the sac removal and subsequent healing goes well & quickly.

My dad had one of those cysts and he barely got it cut out a few weeks ago. He had it for about three years. Luckly it wasn't cancer

My common sense is starting to kick in! Well, NOW we know how to handle this.

I think they should at least have a printed sheet to hand you on they way out the door with instructions for caring for cysts, boils, or anything in that genre.

Paul had one of those cysts on his tailbone area when he was in the Navy. A zillion years ago. He had forgotten about the procedure til now. So, I cleaned it up, no pus or anything, just some blood, and I didn't have to stuff too much gauze in there this time, a sure sign it's healing up from inside.

I do really appreciate all your input and just being there for all the gross talk.

Speaking of spiders my sis got bit on the butt by one. She was sitting in a lawn chair and it found a space in the slats and got her. It was a big red bump then the interesting stuff began to happen. It oozed. She went to see the dr. Aparently the venom of a brown recluse causes human flesh to deterior and breakdown to disintigration. My poor sis had a second bottom for a while that was a few inches deep. I learned that the next time she says "look at what this spider bit did to me" it is best not to see. But then again if you say it's gross I have to see.
