Exactly how am I going to get my meat birds to the abbattoir????

Honestly?!? What kind of question is that. Put them in a cage, put the cage in the trailer, hook the trailer up to the SUV and drive to the market?

Really.

I have a 40 minute drive to the abbattoir (which is what they are called down in these parts), and didn't want to stress the birds out with the drive. I didn't know if it would be hard on them or not to just drive in the back of the trailer with a tarp over them. I didn't know whether the abbattoir would accept them this way.

I realize this may sound like a simple question (obviously to you), and I thought so too until my dh and I were discussing it the other night, with the butcher date coming up so soon. Honestly, if you can't be helpful, just critical-- why respond at all?

First, it doesn't matter how you carry them, travel is stressful for birds in any manner. It doesn't really make any difference whether you carry them in the back of a truck, in an enclosed trailer, or in an open trailer with a tarp, because they'll be stressed by the time you get there anyway.

Second, the only person that can answer your question is the abbattoir, so my best suggestion is to call them directly and see if they have any regulations, or restrictions regarding how they accept birds.

Third, I was merely pointing out the obviousness of the situation. Some things are so simple, and require less thought than we are accustomed to, therefore they can appear more confusing than they really are. You didn't state your intentions in your original post, you merely asked "What was the best way to get them there." It was a simple question, that I posted a simple answer to. Sorry to have offended you.

Well, Obviously, if it WERE obvious to me--I would not have posted. :| IF dog crates had not been mentioned, it would never had occurred to me. I realize it may NOT have been the smartest question this board has ever seen, and by signing clueless in Canada, I was admitting the position I was in. I jsut thought your response ws a little disrespectful.

Sorry mods, I'll be good now., and thanks MissPrissy for the idea

Oh, and abbattoir is tomorrow--they are closed on weekends or I would have called them, had I realized my dilemma in time.

Miss_thenorth, good luck on the transport of the birds. Hope everything goes well for you and them. Thanks for the new word, abattoir. Neither my wife nor I had ever heard of it. Isn't that strange when it's so common elsewhere. I had the same thing to happen the other day when Miss Prissy used the Southern ""stand alone electric eye"" instead of "hotplate". Keep us posted.
