Excessive crowing - new to having a rooster.....advice please

Yep. Do you really need to have a rooster? If not, that could be your solution. Roosters can't really protect a flock from hawks, though they do a good job at watching for and sounding an alarm for hawks they can't do much more than that.

One lady used a wether sheep as her chicken guardian, with great results...he even killed a possum! Not sure how well that would work for hawks, though.

No we don't need a rooster - won't be hatching from eggs. I liked the idea of having one for the alert factor and we raised him from a week old. I'm attached, but in the end I want what is best for him. He deserves to live like a rooster should!

Penned my free range rooster prior to breeding and now he's crowing during the day. Quiet all the time when out on free range, crowing while penned....not excessively, but still sounding off more than I've ever heard him. Could be a correlation.
