Excessive losses?

I'm sure the smoke from fires and the stress from moving around had an affect,
but you'll never really know unless necrospies were done.
You are in the Newcastle Disease outbreak area, correct?

Without a doubt, the smoke could have added to it, but really out of 14 head, and loosing 3 over 3 years, I think that is not abnormal for ordinary chickens, especially for chickens from hatcheries.

People on here have some very long lived chickens, but for many of us, a 4 year old chicken is getting some age on her. If they come from long lived birds, maybe they will continue to lose at that rate, but if they are hatchery birds, I would expect you to loose more the older they get.

Losses are reality of keeping chickens. I try and give them as good of life as possible, protect them the best I am able against predators, and accept that a lot of them will only live 3-4 years.

Thank you, Mrs. K!
That is good to hear. (Actually, I didn’t count my roosters (two I gave away, one is with the flock now) - all of them alive and well while in my care; so I had 16, now 12 chickens total in my flock.)
I will continue to care for them as well as I can. I ordered a few chicks for this Spring to bring in some younger ones (egg production in their third year has gone down a bit, too) - and then see if I can have a broody hatch some of our own eggs next Spring. Most of my hens will have shown that they can at least live to 4 years by then....
Thanks again - that is the reality check I needed!

That sounds really scary. In Sonoma? I have no idea. I don’t think that’s what is affecting my flock though, they are a very healthy looking bunch overall and those losses occured over 2+ years and all with different symptoms...

There was a case reported at the beginning of last month in Redwood City/San Mateo County. So far it has been just the single one, but it's still worrisome, as that bird may have traveled anywhere between/though Tracy, Fremont, and Redwood City

OH good! A single case in San Mateo county sounds better than an outbreak in the wine country... Let’s hope it doesn’t spread!
