Hi, my almost 5 year old Buff Orpington had been showing signs over the last week of being a bit off but was eating so I thought it may have been the bitter cold up here in Upstate NY. In any case she looked particularly off yesterday so I picked her up and she spit out a dark brown fluid. I separated her and have been massaging her crop and more liquid keeps coming out, although it seems to be lessening and getting lighter. The issue is she is exhausted. She fell asleep in my arms after the last massaging. How can I give her water with ACV when she can barely move? Am I too late to save her? Also I want to administer Miconozole Suppository I read about in the forums. Any advice about timing would be much appreciated. She is one of my favorites, and I only have five hens left. (Started with six in 2020).

The Hen I called Goldie died about an hour ago in my arms. I really want to know what I could have done other than interceding earlier, that could have saved her. I wan to make sure I do not lose another hen to Sour crop. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear about Goldie.

You description does sound like she was having some crop symptoms. Often these symptoms are the result of an underlying condition like reproductive disorders, worms, infection, Coccidiosis, etc.

It can be hard to know why one died without further investigation. If you still have the body, sending it to your State Lab will give you the most information. If that's not possible and you are up to it, doing your own informal investigation may give some insight, not always. I usually look at the internals/major organs and reproductive system to see if I can find anything. If you do your own, you can post photos and we'll try to help you with what you see.
