I'm sure all of the chicken owners out there have experienced the feed running out before it was expected. This was my problem for almost a whole year! My feed ran out too fast and one day I literally had NO feed for my girls! Then a friend told me how I can stretch my feed so it lasts way longer. I made a few modifications, but here is a basic recipie:
1 Part Chicken feed
1 Part Oats
1 Part Grit or Oyster Shells (this part is OPTIONAL)

What I use:
1 Part Organic Layer Feed (it's the one with seeds and grains)
1 Part Organic Layer Crumbles
1\2 Part Organic Quaker Oats

This has helped my feed last so much longer. My chickens like it better than the plain old boring Organic Feed. Even my pickier girls enjoy it because of the many different parts to choose from. I DEFINITELY recommend this to anyone who struggles with this problem or who is looking for a new feed to try out. I have been noticing that my girls eat the oats too, not only the feeds. Well, if y'all have any questions, PLEASE ask me! Good luck!

I usually use coupons! Lol!

I could see giving a hand full of oats as a treat, but not as up to 1/3rd of the diet... and, again, I can't see how a box of oats (12 ounces) could be more cost effective than a 50# bag of feed.... unless you are getting it in bulk or free.
