My original 15 quail are not enough, apparently. I'm building a 4'x8'x5' pen out of pvc and plastic garden fence to move those quail outside and on the ground and will use my current three rabbit cages to grow out the 18 that have been sitting in a makeshift brooder (a large rubbermaid tub). I have about 20 in the incubator that are the largest eggs from the original group. The rest of the smaller eggs have an appointment with the pickling department. I have some ideas about what to put into the new pen (a small shelter, feeder, and waterer) and I bet someone has other ideas that I haven't thought of. Feel free to critique my plan.

Is the cage going to be outside? I would cover the top of the cage completely if so, and put a dust bath pan in the cage instead of a shelter. That way, if it's raining, they won't need to stand in their shelter all day

The pen will be covered with blue tarp, like my hoop coops. I have a nice, shady spot to put it as well. If all goes well, more are planned. I'll probably have to replace the blue tarp with a heavier silver one when the colder and wetter weather begins here in N. Texas. Once in a while, we even get measurable snow here. Two years ago, we got ten inches of the stuff..not much for y'all that are used to drifts up to your eyeballs, but a blizzard for this ol' boy from S. Texas!
