Expecting 19F Saturday Night so I'm Nervous -- Advice Wanted.

Oh how sad😟 .I'm sorry😟

I agree with him on that point, actually.

I couldn't blame the cats for acting like cats. That's why I made the cage for my incubator.

Could you put them in a container in the brooder? The sides might keep in the warmth, and you might be able to raise it closer to the lamp.

The lamp is on a chain I can adjust, but I do not believe that a container would be safe closer to the 250w bulb than the current distance to the floor.

That makes total sense. Try the bricks/rocks? You could put them in today and see how warm they get under the lamp. Might give you a good idea for how well it will work tonight.

I always put the brooder's thermometer on a brick because it's a good proxy for the height of a chick's back.
Well, there you go! Sounds like you have a good setup for very cold temps! My guess is they'll probably be fine. 😊

I like your set up. I have an empty duck house (my ducks decided to move in with the chickens, much to the chickens' dismay) I can do something similar with.

If you have any spare bales of pine shavings, you could bring the bales into the house for a few hours to warm them, then use them (unopened) to line the perimeter of the 4x5 area the chicks are in. That'd make a smaller area, and the bales would be warmer. It'd require an expenditure if you don't have unopened bales, but at least you could use them later. Or, another tupperware bin/tote on its side and straw/bedding in that, with its opening right under the lamp.
