Experienced Trader Joe hatchers

Well, leghorns do lay a lot of large eggs in a year, I believe the most eggs of any other breed, but I don't know if what we hatch is necessarily of any special quality ( I doubt it) They're just white leghorns, the same ones most mass producers use to make grocery store eggs, but of course, a sweet beautiful healthy leghorn with ability to graze makes a huge difference in quality!

 

[what did I do]

I hatched out some TJ eggs this June and the Ti leghorns are a yellowish color but my hatchery leghorn's are white. I understand that the sun will yellow them but why the TJ's and not the hatchery ones?

Weird, mine are snow white (except where one pooped on the other, LOL) and were only yellow when they were first hatched. I didn't know the sun could yellow them?? Strange?!!!

I just candled my other batch of TJ eggs, they are fertile but no development and today is day 9. I know that with refrigerated eggs it could take longer, but I am loosing my hope for these guys

Did you check the date on them? Not the expiration date, but the laying date? It's on the side of the carton, and is written in Julian calendar format, 3 digit number from 1-366 (this year is leap year) So today is 308. You want to get eggs that are under 10 days old, I've seen them as "fresh" as 4 days old, but I don't think they make it to market any sooner, so if you see 4-7 days, that's really good.

You really should see lots of veins by day 4, these shells are super easy to see through.

Yep, mine are 6 days old and nothing yet, I think my 3 dozen eggs will be going to the dumpster

3 dozen eggs ...oh well.better luck next time. In any case I have eggs to hatch now. My Silkies are hatching and my emus just started to lay eggs
