Explaining Chicken Math

I too am a victim of chicken math. It started out at as 6 last year, then turned to 17. This year started out as a 3-4 more, and I now have 20 in the brooder.
The good part is my husband is just as obsessed as me about the whole thing...in fact it was his idea, so now if he says anything about them, I just remind him he started it.

I am really itching to get an incubator and I really NEED some blue cochins and silkies. My Aracauna girls are a little broody, but I do not think they will hatch. I am about to become even more of a chicken math victim, because I am not finding any places to order these breeds without having to buy a ton. I wish there were people closer to me that would go in on an order.

Theres this really "horrible" law here that allows us to only have 15 adult chickens per acre BUT non adults count half. On top of that if your adult chickens miss being on your property for one day, or part thereof, out of 365 days, they dont count.
So I am trying to see how I can work this chicken math to take my chicks on a day trip sometime this summer. :)

You could always become a chick hatcher and seller. That is what I would have to do if I had a limit. I would hatch chicks, brood them out, and sell them, all the time around the clock...that way I could get my chicken fill, but not break the rules...because I assume chicks in the living room that no one can see don't count at all...so outside I would have the maximum number, and inside I would have a whole lot more...Lol.

I have 16 now. 7 Buff Orpington, 5 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Black Australorp, 2 Buff Cochin Bantam. lol Sadly, I won't be happy until I also have Lavender Wyandotte, Dominique, Ameraucana, Black Copper Maran, and Olive Egger. >.> I have an addiction. Every day that I don't purchase one is a step in a healthy direction right? I can't help myself. It's not like anyone is really trying to stop me. lol

I think my DH who wanted nothing to do with chickens is becoming a victim of chicken math. We started out with 12 last year culled - 2 roosters =10, got + 8 chicks at the local TSC =18 then my daughter found BA at another TSC, I had to have some of those so + 6 = 24 we went on short vacation my daughter found some GLW while we were gone did not tell my DH about these + 6 = 30. He was looking in the brooder one day and asked why some were so much smaller I told him it was a different breed. ( Think I'm busted at this point

) Then he said looks like we have 6 roosters better get 6 or 12 more so we have enough hens.( YES!!!HAHAHA!!!

Try your state thread. People are closer than you think! Also, TSC and any other feed store will have a bulletin board. Place an ad!

I think he is a closet chicken-aholic!

For whatever reason it is super easy to become fanatical about chickens, and it makes you want to talk about them all the time, which annoys people that aren't a part of the chicken crowd...lol. My husband is an tv and Internet technician and since we've had the chickens he has at least one story everyday about talking with someone about chickens. He goes to people's houses all day everyday and all across the board people with chickens love to talk about their chickens with people that also enjoy chickens. He met a guy today that fights chickens. He even called his extra cash his chicken fighting money... My husband noticed he had some chicks and asked the guy what kind they were he told my hubby they were fighting game chickens...seems that a person wouldn't tell a total stranger about their illegal activities

Took my daughter to volleyball practice today. Practices last for 2 hrs. I ended up talking to one of the other parents for an hour & a half about chickens!

LOL! I wish my boyfriend's approach was like that! I mean, he HAS been pretty tolerant of my chicken math, but his response has more or less been, "I don't care." But I wish he would be excited or annoyed either way!

Then again, he WAS happy when we realized yesterday we could keep two roosters rather than one ;)

My chicken math almost gave way to ducks. That stopped when my boyfriend said it would probably be better if we do ducks next year, not this year. But there's a huge poultry swap here in June, so maybe I can change his mind and build a duck house before then ;)

How much space do you have? I am just doing a study on how to raise chickens and of the chicken life. I am in town where it is illegal to have "livestock" on the property. My sister-in-law is planning to have chickens as soon as they settle down in their new rural property and I want to help take care of them. I live 23 miles away so it it will be a labor of love. The idea is to have eggs and fryers for all who help out. I am a early retiree and want to learn something new and useful. I sure wish I could have say four hens here though.
