It's nice to know there are others out there like me!lol. I just wish everyone knew the joy of chickens!!

So I'm not the only crazy person out there. I have 11 chicks now, and I think I'm okay with 8 in the coop that we built. I'm sure the 2 first rescues that are now 4-5 weeks are for sure Pullets, I took 6 chicks from a lady who hatched them for Preschool, not even sure what they even are, and I bought 2 RIR and 2 EE pullets yesterday when I went to pickup a nipple water container. I couldn't help it, I want colored eggs, and then I thought well I should get at least 2 RIR cause I have no idea what the others are.

I think I'm going to be building another coop for the huge run, or will have to part with at least 4 of them. :(

I started out with 12 chicks- 6 EE and 6 buff orpingtons. Dog attack took all of those. Ended up at a swap after reinforcing the coop and run so that a nuclear bomb couldn't take it down. Ended up with a mix of silkies, Wyandotte, d'uccle, polish and Phoenix for a total of 11. Lost 4 so ended up with 7 total. The 3 silkies turned out to be Roos.

Went to TSC to pick up feed and got to talking to my chicken guy there about my roo to hen ratio and he suggested that I add a 12 more hens total, and he said this in front of hubby. He suggested leghorns, reds or golden comets, which they didn't have. I stalked Craigslist and called TSC on chick arrival day until the pullets arrived. First trip ended up with 2 reds and 10 goldens. Lost 1 for unknown reason. Had a hen go broody on 10 eggs, 1 hatched - silkie Phoenix mix that is definitely a roo. Which meant I need 6 more hens to give me a total of 26, right? Nope.

Off to TSC for feed and they had a mix of white chicks (tetra and leghorns most likely) picked up 7. Few days later hubby was out and came home to tell me about a farm store with chick sign outside. Next day we made a trip and came back with 3 speckled Sussex, 3 gold wyandottes, 3 silver wyandottes, and 3 brown brahamas.

So 7+1+12-1+7+12=38 all thanks to the fact that I love my silkie roos too much to rehome them. The extra 12 I blame totally on hubby since he mentioned them to me. I've luckily stayed away from the swaps lately otherwise I know I'd end up with more and then my roo to hen ratio would be off.

Feb/Mar 2013 = 7
Mar/April 2013 = 38

I think the only way to beat chicken math is to hatch eggs and sell chicks all the time. People love chicks. That way you can get your chick fix, make a little extra money, and not need 40 acres of land space And a 300 ft coop... Lol

I think my DH who wanted nothing to do with chickens is becoming a victim of chicken math. We started out with 12 last year culled - 2 roosters =10, got + 8 chicks at the local TSC =18 then my daughter found BA at another TSC, I had to have some of those so + 6 = 24 we went on short vacation my daughter found some GLW while we were gone did not tell my DH about these + 6 = 30. He was looking in the brooder one day and asked why some were so much smaller I told him it was a different breed. ( Think I'm busted at this point

) Then he said looks like we have 6 roosters better get 6 or 12 more so we have enough hens.( YES!!!HAHAHA!!!

Update: I got 1more leghorn 1 RSL, 5JG, 3 GLW so that's +10=40. Then I made the mistake of going on craigs list, a gentleman 30 miles away has SLW and Light Brahma' chicks for sale I'm going the 18th to pick up a couple of each So that's 2+2=44. OMG I think I'm out of control!!!
