Explaining Chicken Math

My chicken math started believe it or not with 2 turkeys. I saw the baby turkeys and just had to have them. My hubby was not to happy but allowed it. A few months later my kids played a game at our local relay for life and the prize you guest it chicks and who can say no to that. So im now up to 2 turkeys and 3 chicks one for each kid. So the hubby and i found scrap wood and build a coop. I found myself with 2 roos so i sent one to my uncle a big chicken fan to. He heard about me having turkeys so we made a deal the turkeys where picking on the chickens, so he got the 2 turkeys and he gave me 2 hens for each turkey so that brings me up to 6 chickens. Then my husband and i went to tsc and they had chicks and i just had to have them and of course there is that limit to buy 6 so that puts me up to 12 i lost one. Now my uncle ask if i could hatch a few eggs for him under my broody hen so i did and it was duck eggs my kids fell in love with them so in payment for hatching them for him you got it he gave each of my kids a duckling so that us 3 ducklings so i went from 2 turkeys to 0 turkeys,10 hens,1 roo, and 3 ducklings so 2 turkeys equals 14 birds in all. And if my kids have anything to do with it there will be more but i am loving it they bring me more joy than i ever thought they would

I use "chicken math" constantly! We set out to get 5-6 chickens...ended up with 50. We have a big coop for all sorts of heavy layers and our 3 year old has her own coop/yard for her 20 or so silkies. My husband calls me the chicken lady. My theory is what's one or two more on top of 40? We have the room...the property, why not? Best little pets ever. :)

Chicken math
1 pet rooster given to me for my twelfth wedding anniversary.
2 hens given to me by my sister.
1 rescued hen.
3 irresistable banty chicks from the mystery bin at tsc.
6 blrw chicks to start my dream flock.
Totals 13 SO FAR
I hadn't even planned on getting chickens this year.

My coop is not big enough for chicken math.............

I don't even have my first bird yet, and I'm already planning the coop expansion.

I posted this in another thread, before I got the chicks today. But here is about how it goes for me.

I used to have chickens, so I have an idea of what I wanted. I knew someone who had chicks of the breed I like and I exchanged labor for birds. Our initial agreement was 12 chicks for the labor I provided. This was a few days prior to the work. The day I did the work, as I left, they said "So you wanted 20 chicks, right?" So chicken math has begun, not even by me. Today I went to pick up my chicks. I'm greeted by a "would you mind taking 30?"

Well story short, I got a lot more birds than anticipated. But I am not going to deny the fact that I enjoyed receiving more birds than expected. I'm really quite pleased because it means that next year I will most certainly have about 50... or 70, give or probably not take 200.

I think I figured out chicken math...one hen plus one rooster can equal up to 8-12 chicks. from there on...it EXPLODES! now mind you that is if all the eggs are fertilized and make it. As in the case of my hens and their rooster...out of 48 eggs...so far only 7 have hatched and maybe a couple more if I am lucky...but then I only started with 5 hens and one rooster.

Unless you make them have sex its not your responsibility so you dont have to count those chicks at all. :D
