I sooo believe that one... not.

I "accidentally" checked the availability of some chicks last night. I can get them the 16th. I told DH, and he never said no.

I need to stay strong. Do I really want chicks in this rotten weather? 78 today, 43 tomorrow. 56 tonight, 32 tomorrow night.

Someone tell me no!
This is the chicken math thread. Who would tell me no here?

NOW I know why my daughter failed algebra. She's actually born to be a chicken farmer! lol Hubby, who is an actual math lover, jokingly explained that "2+2=5 for extremely large values of 2." (it's a calculus joke, I guess) But NOW I can tell him, "No, 2+2=47" judging by the above stories I've been reading. This is my new favorite web site. Love the forums here. :D

It is a good thing I didn't have chickens 16 years ago! I have a mixed accent (NJ/NY with a little of this and that mixed in). I was trying to teach my nephew to speak, but some things I just couldn't! We were living in Ohio. "tawk" "dawg" etc. are NOT acceptable. If I had had to teach him math, I would have told him the same thing you said!

A few weeks ago I traded 2 pullets for a pair. This weekend I will give away 4 hens. That means I am up a rooster, down five hens. I had culled five roosters a few month ago, so I am down nine birds. One rooster is gonna have to go if he doesn't straighten up, so I will be down ten birds. The coop fits 30, so I need 20 more.
BECAUSE ... I am down to fifteen girls, and one may not lay due to her deformities. Fourteen girls when I was supposed to have twenty means I will have to get 30 to make up the difference.
So, I will call some other chicken math victims, and get my forty chicks. I hope they are all girls, or else I will need fifty more.

Well I never fully understood "chicken math" until I started buying chicks.

I WANTED 4-6 Bantam pullets for eggs & pets. So I looked locally--nothing. Nobody had any chicks. So I went to McMurrays website. Ok, they had what I wanted but a minimum of 25. No problem--I could get rid of the extras and some will SURELY not make it.

So the 25 come, but becomes 27 with an extra Bantam + the Mystery Chick. A week later I see a local CL ad for Silkie chicks 1 week old. Since Silkies were one of the breeds I REALLY wanted, I called the lady about FOUR chicks. She talked me into all of them-- which was 7.

Ok so now I'm up to 34 -- in ONE week. Guess what??!!! None of them died. Heck they didn't even have 'pasty butt' ONCE!! Healthy, happy little Chickies.

I talked the feedstore into taking 18 + the Mystery Chick in trade for chicken stuff & dog food. Right now I'm holding steady @ 15. They are 4.5 weeks old. I'm hoping to keep 6-7 pullets & MAYBE 1 rooster.

When one of the hens goes broody though-- I'm getting me some Serama eggs!!

I thought I would bring back up this thread because I'm going through what all you guys have and haven't even got my run, coop or incubator finished/built!
Started out wanting 6 and now plan to order 25 RIR hatching eggs from a hatchery (unsure of which one yet) and then 12 or 16 Silkie eggs from Bargain (Garry farm)!

<---what David wan't to do to me already, since I only talk "Chicken" now! lol
Although he is up for it and who originally mentioned chickens, but we have both said we can always find homes for the ones "like roos" that we don't want. But I secretly know like you guys we will end up with more...

I just won't tell him that.
Our minimum will have to be 20-25 though since our run will be a 10'x20' which will house silkies and RIR's.

I start on my incubator tomorrow!

Aren't Silkies more bantam size? You can have double the bantams, so the silkies will have a similar rule.
And the math lesson begins!
