exploding eggs

Ok, that innocent looking bag out there that looked like it held extra egg cartons had eggs in it. I went to toss out the "bag of egg cartons", and eggs ended up in the bed of the pickup. Hubby decides to use his boot to brush them out of the bed of the truck only to come under fire of what sounded like a .22 rifle barrage. He got rotten egg guts all over his boots.

He also got a hands on lesson in rotten egg mechanics as well as gastro intestinal fortitude. At any rate, the expensive boots are rotten smelling. How do I proceed to get the nasty smell out of the distressed leather boots?

Thanks in advance. I wasn't sure where to put this, just figured you hatching folks might have had this happen before.

Eeh, I had that happen once. I used a ton of hydrogen Peroxide because I was really freakin out, but I dont think that would make the boots look too good. Mine was just on a bookshelf outside. Good question though, I wonder what everyone'll say?

it's been awhile.. but from what my mother told me and what I remember seeing her do:
first she cleaned off as much of the gunk as possible with a scrub brush and wet towels (paper towels now I suppose).. then loaded them down with baking soda... after the smell was gone she brushed off the extra baking soda and used a good quality leather cleaner.. (seems to me she placed the shoes in a box and covered the offending areas with baking soda and left it for a few days)

now there is febreeze and all sorts of "enzyme" type cleaners.. dunno how well they would do with rotten egg on leather though
