External Pipping

Being my first hatch it was very sad. Power went out at our house and humidity dropped, the little babies were wrapped in tight leather with one i am guessing having internally pipped because they pretty much absorbed almost the whole yolk. I would have to say though that from now on after this thread I, I won't hesitate to assist in external pipping. General guidelines I think I am going to follow from now on. If I can tell that a chick is moving, has moved into the air sac and its day 22, I plan on doing an external pip for an assist but will let them zip on their own if they can. If I know there was an issue with humidity dropping, I will assist further with the zipping process. Also if they pip on the wrong end, I will assist then too. Any thoughts on this anyone?

Sounds good to me

Thanks so much for the feedback on that! I felt like even though I based my guidelines on experience and other great posts here on the site, many times I am left feeling like most people have a do nothing attitude, which is neither good nor bad. However I am a registered nurse and feel medically intervening on occasion is necessary. The advice to do nothing can make things more confusing when trying to develop a sound plan. One question, the scientific side of me doesn't mind sitting next to the incubator without interfering beyond insuring correct temp and humidity but how long after day 21 is a good time to turn off the incubator. At day 23 the eggs were so still and thought if they had internally pipped and absorbed the yoke they might still be alive.

Hi been following this thread for a couple of days ...on of my duck eggs began external pip yesterday .... I waited 24 hrs and nothing... She's still moving and actively pecking.... I have to work today till 4 and I was worried so I started to peel the outer shell.... And I put a wet paper towel in there with her .... I peeled 50% of the outer shell and had to leave... She was peeping and moving like crazy.... Now here u am at work twiddling my thumbs!!!! Help someone advise me!!! Was I wrong to assist.... I assisted with my goose and she's a month old and doing great.... But I helped her hatch in an hour .... I'm leaving my duck to do it alone

What are we to do when we see all out hatch die. Help if you feel you need to. I hope your duckling is out when you get home.

I have a pip in one of my eggs, and I have moved a bit of the shell away to help. I can`t let another hatch fail.
