Externally pipped 24 hours ago, no progress whatsoever but trying really hard. When do I help?

Gosling pipped 24 hours ago and seems to be trying really hard to get out of the shell but making no progress. He did not even pierce the outer membrane, he just made a crack and can't seem to get any further...

This is my first hatch and I don't want to assist too soon and end up hurting him. I have read the step by step guide by Sally Sunshine over and over and it seems like I should help but I would really appreciate a more knowledgeable/experienced persons input. Thanks so much

I did chip a tiny bit of the shell away just so that I could be sure he was getting enough air (he made just a crack, not a hole, so I was worried that wasn't enough air for him).... but I didn't break the outer membrane, there's still a white membrane. He's actually pressing his beak against that membrane and still can't seem to get through. Do you think I should open up the outer membrane? I am just really scared of accidentally piercing the inner membrane... Thanks so much for your reply!

Shoot I don't know a thing about hatching geese but if they are anything like ducks you should be just fine.
Continue to do nothing but wait.
Ducks can take days to hatch after the first crack.
24 hours is not long at all.

I'm not really and egg or hatching expert... but I will go do some research real quick so that way I can continue to help you!
How thick is the membrane?
Is it drying up from where you made the chip?
If so, use some coconut oil to help make it wet again

Thanks so much! I'm not sure how to tell how thick the membrane is but it hasn't changed colour. It's very white though and I think it is supposed to be more clear? I don't have a new tub of coconut oil (germy if unsealed?), but I did buy sterile saline and bacitracin ointment for this purpose...would either of those work?

It's concerning that he seems to be bashing the shell over and over and just not making any progress but I also know that assisting too soon is the worst thing you could do. At what point would you assist a duck?

After at least 48 hours and only if it looked like it was getting tired.

Sit back and wait.
Go shopping.

Okay thank you! One other thing, he has not peeped this whole entire time... don't they usually start making peeping noises? Is that in any way a red flag? I can shine the flashlight through the incubator and sort of make out shadows sometimes, and often that will make the egg wiggle more, but other than that my only way of assessing him would be to open the incubator and properly candle but really worried about shrinkwrapping. When would you check on him? The incubator is in the spare bathroom and when I did open it, I ran the shower and closed the door to keep it steamy in there, is that a good thing to do?
