Hi this morning when I took my chickens out of their coop I noticed that one of them had a significantly swollen eye and I cannot even see it. This has never happened to me and I have no idea what to do. I don’t want her to loose her eye! Please let me know what you think it could be or what I could do! Can I rinse it with something? The darn poultry vet is not open today and I am freaking out. All I have at home is water eye solution!

It could be early sign of a respiratory disease or from a peck in the eye. It would be good to eventually get a good look in case of a foreign body or something stuck in the eye. You can rinse the eye with eye wash, and apply a dab of either Terramycin eye ointment or plain Neosporin ointment 2-3 times a day. Sometimes there may be pus around the eye into the sinus cavity and that needs to come out if the antibiotic ointment doesn’t help. If you think this may be a respiratory disease then you may want to get oral antibiotics. Tylosin is one that is used.

Have you heard any frequent sneezing or crackly breathing from her? Have you added any new birds in the last few weeks? Here is some reading about mycoplasma gallisepticum and coryza which can cause respiratory diseases that cause eye swelling:

She is eating fine. No sneezing or lethargy or crackly . I was trying to remove it but it would not come out. I’m glad I didn’t because now I am not sure if it is pus or a part of her eye that is swollen. Here is another pic.

She looks better. I’m just taking her to the vet.

What did the vet have to say or think it is? Were they able to get the pus out of the eye?
The meds below for the eyes plus metacam oral, Plus nebulizer medication. I think he did something with her eyes. But I dont think he needed to perform crazy eye surgery. I don’t have the metacam in the picture but you know what it is. He said the drops would be a start for the eyes. Since she is not having any respiratory symptoms… “meaning issues with her breathing or lungs”. He didn’t think she needed systemic therapy and wanted to just start with localized therapy. Nonetheless he did still give me medication to do nebulizer treatments and to have in the event that she does develop respiratory issues. But basically no systemic therapy for now. I guess you could call nebulizer treatment sort of systemic. It has some drugs in it. I have been doing the nebulizer treatments because they are good for her lungs… and it helps to break up any mucus. But basically he said it is either viral or bacterial. If it is bacterial then the drops will work. If it is viral he said the virus needs to take its course and we would just do supportive care. Her eyes are no longer swollen. Thanks to our a Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and medication. She still has good energy, she still eats and drinks fluids. I am providing her rooster booster vitamin in her water. You know the famous one all you folks know about. That one.. Basically a virus has to take its course so all you would do is supportive care. Yes I know that perhaps there are antiretroviral medications like the ones we give people with shingles, HIV, herpes just to name a few… He did offer to do cultures but he then told me that the total cost would be very expensive. I knew that the meds and the visit cost would be expensive🙂 alone. He said he could send the test out but it would involve the state and it would be expensive. I opted out with the cultures. He agreed that was a good idea. I like how honest he was and not pushy. So I am just praying now and provider her the best care possible. For now I plan to read poultry text books intended for veterinarians to supplement my learning.

Cheers. Hope your doing well and are happy.
