Hi, so I stopped the Terramycin ointment and started the Tylan 50 last night. This morning her eye contained white discharge and it was closed. She’s already had 6 days on the Terramycin so I can’t give her that anymore. Is that white discharge normal because I stopped the ointment ? Is this something that the Tylan 50 will clear up ? Besides warm water and salineI don’t know what else to do to make her eye feel more comfortable. Thanks

I would continue to clean the eye with saline and apply the Terramycin eye ointment. You can also use plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment if necessary. Is there swelling? Tylan treats mycoplasma (MG.)

I wasn’t sure if it was safe to continue the Terramycin or not since she’d already used it for six days. The ointment was helping but not 100%. I will continue then as you suggested and treat the eye along with giving the Tylan 50. Do you have an idea of how long it’s safe to use the ointment on her? Thank you

I would use it for another week if you are still seeing the white drainage. If there is swelling around the eye, there may be pus that needs to come out.

I have a question. At what point should I notice an improvement in her eye from tylan 50? We have already given 7th dose and she still has an inflamed eye and it’s still bubbling in the corner? She also keeps that eye closed, more now than before. We tried vetrx the last two days.

Her appetite seems good, but she’s picky about what she will eat. She barely touches her layer pellets, but will eat lettuce, worms, bread, etc. I did offer her a pellet mash, which she ate some of, but then lost interest. She also isn’t interested in drinking much water either. Should we see an improvement by now or am I being impatient? We just want the our girl to feel better!

Are you giving 1/4 ml per pound 3 times a day of the Tylan 50? It treats MG symptoms. Sometimes there can be secondary infections. Hopefully you will see improvement soon. Make sure that she is drinking well. I would offer some watery feed, and add a little scrambled egg with more water. MG is a chronic lifelong disease, and though Tylan can treat symptoms, it can come back, but chickens may be weakened and unthrifty. Here is some reading about it:

We discovered this in her eye today! Could this be an eye worm? Doesn’t seem to move when flushing with saline, How do I remove this if it is in fact a worm? Thanks

This thing is still in her eye. The eye still bubbles and she keeps it shut most of the time. She doesn’t eat much, but if we put food in front of her and give her some encouragement, we can get her to eat. However, she will not drink any fluids voluntarily. She has been getting all of her fluids through food and syringe feeding.

We’ve been doing saline rinses multiple times a day and putting Terramycin in her eye daily and the eye hasn’t improved. She gets temporary relief from the Terramycin, but it’s not clearing her eye up. We also tried Tylan 50 (given orally) and she didn’t respond to it. Would Denagard be a better option, or if Tylan didn’t work, would that mean Denagard won’t work either?

She also hasn’t developed any of the other symptoms typically associated with either Coryza or Mycoplasma. She has the inflamed, bubbly eye, decreased appetite, not drinking water and she does some weird thing with her right leg, where she kind of lifts it into the air and sort of kicks it backwards. I also noticed that when she is laying in her cage, she tends to shift more of her weight onto her left side and off of that right leg. Could this indicate lameness? These have been the only symptoms she has had all along. She isn’t getting better on her own, but she isn’t developing any new symptoms either.

Can you try to remove the white object with a QTip? I guess it may be some exudate (pus) in the eye. Sometimes chickens will get debris in the eye, and that can create infection. Eye worms are pretty rare, more common in the tropics. What is your location? Can you upload a video of her walking to YouTube or Vimeo with a link posted here?
