The reason I didn't "yank" out the "foreign object" is because it was attached to her inner eyelid...not because I was too lazy or too scared to do it (see my post on 5/03/09 in the evening). Mahonri mentioned the neosporin as well and I did use it, but thought I should get the terramycin eye ointment to be safe. In the future, I will use neosporin for regular eye infections, however, this time I am glad I went to the vet (as described below). Thanks everyone for your input! It has been greatly appreciated!
I took her to the vet and the doc put a numbing solution in her eye, had a tech hold her and very carefully (with magnifying glasses on) trimmed the piece off that was in her eye. Apparently she has a large tear in her inner eyelid and the "foreign object" was a portion of the inner eyelid that was just barely hanging on. The vet thinks (and I agree) that she must have gotten pecked in the eye. The globe of the eye (cornea, etc) is not affected and her eye sight is fine. Our vet said that her inner eylid may ball up with scar tissue, and if that is the case, she (the vet) will trim it out, so that the chick will not have problems. Hopefully it will heal fine though. She is to remain on the Aureomycin and the vet put her on antibiotic eye drops rather than an ointment. The green mucus stuff has gone away (likely due to the Aureomycin), but her eye is swollen and irritated (as is to be expected).
As a side note, my vet absolutely loved my chick (a 6 wk old Jersey Giant pullet). She has chickens, but built a new coop/run and wants it to be heavy dual purpose breeds. We have a straight run, so we won't keep all of the roos. She is very interested in taking at least one roo, if not more, for her own flock. Too bad we couldn't exchange the vet appt. for a roo!
