Hello!! I have been following BYC for a couple years now. Was a newbie to farming and had much to learn! I am still learning how to navigate the forum, I am used to just searching a topic, so I hope it is okay I posted this problem here. Being that I also have horses, goat, ducks, dogs, honeybees and a cat, My chickens seemed kind of care free! They are free range layers with a nice coop to roost at night. I have a variety of hens and a rooster. Never had any problems at all until about 6 months ago, one seemed to have a respiratory condition. by the time I notice her gasping for air she was dead two days later. Now I have my second problem. I noticed this hen about a week or so ago. This exudate was barely covering the eye, but kind of hard, I couldn't wipe it away. I put some vetrx (all I could think of at the time) I had to go out of town. now this pic is two days ago. I have been searching like crazy and can't confirm what it may be. I have tried to get it out today, half broke off and fell to the ground and another chicken ate it! :( she was getting stressed so I stopped for the time being and put some terramycin in it. My feed store rep recommended giving her .25-..5 cc Penicillin. Hope someone has seen this before. She is still eating and drinking . I have about a dozen chickens. How contagious? Thank you all in advance! Love this site!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh, that is awful! Does the face have a smell to it? If it smells really bad, then it may be Coryza. Does she have a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing as well? If so, she either has Coryza or MG. Penicillin will not take care of respiratory issues. She needs some Sulfadimethoxine. You will have to order this on line. Here is a link to where I get my meds...http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/...r-solubles/sulfadimethoxine-liquid-16-oz.html

This will also work for MG as well.

Is this in both eyes and no symptoms of respiratory ailments? She could have an eye infection, however if you have seen deaths in your flock before with respiratory ailments, I would gather this is not an eye infection. Here is a link to some eye meds if you should need them...http://www.firststatevetsupply.com/store2/antibiotics/opthalmics.html

Either way, you might post this in our emergency section for more help. Don't wait on this. She looks pretty bad...https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Good luck and I hope you can get her healed up soon!

Thanks Two Crows.. I have some Sulfadimethoxine. I will try that. Yeah, it kind of smells. Only one eye. all swelled around eye too. other seem totally fine, no other signed of illness... Will check out your links. thank you!

Thank you for all the links Mountain Peeps! and Flock Master, I did repost. Thanks so much, I will post any updates there...

Do you have her separated from the others, so they will not bother her eye? That really looks horrible. Hope the ER people can diagnose and advice treatment promptly.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm really sorry about your chicken's eye. The other members have given you some really good advice and links. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. I hope your hen recovers.

The first thing to do is massage the area around the eye. You can use a warn compress as well. The yellow junk should pop out and she will be right as rain. She may lose vision in that eye though :(
