Hi,
My bantam sumatra roo got pecked in the eye by his hen during a skirmish over mealworms 36 hours ago. At first it was just watery and he kept it closed and the other eye watered a bit too. Now both eyes are closed and the pecked eye looks a bit swollen. I've been applying vetricin 2x a day and neosporin. He drinks if I hold the water up to his beak and dip it in there. He's in the house now where I can keep n eye on him. We don't have a chicken vet anywhere around so it's all me. He hasn't eaten. And I don't know what else to do. We are leaving a week from today on vacation. Any advice? Also I've been keeping watch on the hen, they live in a pen away from the other birds, and she isn't showing any signs of respiratory infection. I don't think he has one since his breathing is ( I was concerned just because he could have one in addition to the eye injury, stranger things have happened) ok there's no discharge or breathing issues. But there is some white gunk under the eyelid when I open it. My biggest worry is that both eyes are shut and only 1 got pecked. Thoughts? Advice? Really stressing over this

He's closing his eyes because he's in pain. Take that as obvious.

Don't assume it was a peck in the eye that started this. It could be a serious infection that requires something stronger than Neosporin. Call around to your feed stores, if you are lucky enough to have more than one, and ask for terramycin ophthalmic ointment. Use that twice a day in each eye after flushing each eye with saline each time.

In addition, I would start him on Tylan 50, a systemic antibiotic for respiratory disorders which can affect just the eye.

I agree that I would vigorously treat his eye with the antibiotic ointment. Plain Neosporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment are good as well for the eye if you cannot get the Terramycin. My dog recently had Neosporin eye ointment prescribed by my vet for a scratched cornea. When I ran out, I used the OTC brand without issues. If you see pus, it may need to be squeezed out or removed with a tool or Qtip.

I would mix some chicken feed with a lot of water (Poultry NutriDrench or vitamins may be added) and feed that to him by offering a small bowl or scoop up to his beak several times a day. Chopped scambled egg, tuna, or chopped meat are also good to offer. If he is no better by next week before you leave, you will need to train someone to do this for you.

He is not cooperating with pics. I found terramycin at TSC, could not get Tylan 50 anywhere. Applied the eye ointment and around noon and I just checked home and both eyes are open. The swelling is decreasing and he's eating scrambled eggs and yogurt with a side of mealworms. There is no drainage or discharge from anywhere. His eyes are a bit goopy and watery but that could be the meds. I'll try to get pics again later. Thank you all for your advice.
