Hi all. I have a 9 week old chick who was pecked in the lower eyelid 1 week ago. It started out with just a tiny amount of redness on the lower eyelid and the inner eyelid was slightly exposed. I started treating it with terramycin eye ointment three times a day two days ago and it’s getting worse by the day. I thought maybe she’s getting dirt and debris in it so I brought her inside last night. It looks really bad this morning. Is there anything else I can treat it with? Something stronger? Could she be allergic to the terramycin ointment?

Thanks for the help

It looks like bubbles in the eye, and possibly nasal drainage. I would go ahead and get some Tylosin to start treatment for a possible respiratory infection. Rinse the eye twice a day with saline or an eye wash, clean off any crusty drainage, before applying the Terramycin.

Hi, thank you for the response! I am fairly certain this is not a respiratory issue. There are bubbles in the eye but I believe that is from the injured eye. There isn't any nasal drainage, that dirt is from the drainage from her eye and her being outside. She has a lot of drainage from her eye. She isn't sneezing or doing anything else that would make me think respiratory. The other side of her face is completely normal- if it was respiratory would she have drainage from both eyes?
Would the Tylosin help if this isn't respiratory?

Here’s a picture of the other side of her face. Still think respiratory? Or is this from the eye injury?

Most cases of MG respiratory disease start with one swollen or bubbly eye. They may not have other symptoms. Tylosin is pretty safe, found online, and one of few things approved for chickens. It would be better to nip it in the bud, since the ointment alone is not working. Your vet may get it sooner, but here is where I find Tylosin:

Perfect, thank you! I'll order it. Could you tell me the dosing please?

Would it hurt to try other eye meds or just stick with the terramycin? I was looking at the Vetericyn Opthalmic gel or the MicrocynAH Ophthalmic Gel

Also, I am doing warm compresses and waiting for my saline solution to come in today. When flushing out her eye, do I squirt the saline directly into her eye? Or just a bit above and let it run into her eye?

Thank you for your help!

@Eggcessive I just found some Tylosin powder 350mg (it's a powder) that was prescribed to my dog. Can I use that? dose? (I did order the tylosin from the website but figured I could start this sooner).

Thank you!! :)
