I am new to chickens this year. My 1 month old bantam silkies had been housed with 4 full size chicks who were a week older. One of the hens, a barred rock, is very dominant and pecks all the others every morning once or twice just to remind them who's boss. One morning, one of the bantams, the largest chick, had a swollen eye. You can see the before pictures here. Some days it could barely see out of the eye because the lump was so big. After 5 days, the lump wasn't resolving on it's own. The lump looked grey and the lid wasn't closing over it, so I was worried the tissue would dry out I gave 1-2 minute hot compresses 3 times a day, plus applied triple antibiotic ointment mixed with human ophthalmic ointment for pink eye after the compress. That's all I had. The lump was getting bigger. The whole eye was blocked by the lump(s). I read about chicken eye lumps on the internet. I read that chickens can die from eye lumps. I submitted photos of my chicken's eye to nearest vet school DVM poultry specialist. They said, "probably sinusitis. Take to local vet or bring here (5 hours away)" My daughter returned my car and I went to Tractor Supply and bought Terramycin ophthalmic ointment labeled for dogs and horses. I started applying it to the chicken's eye 4 times a day. That same day the local vet lanced the lump, got clear liquid out and said it seemed like a solid mass not likely to go away since there was no pus or oozing. I continued the Terramycin ointment to prevent secondary infection after lancing of the lump and resigned myself to having a chicken with eye cancer.. The next day, the lump was much smaller. Here is the photo of the eye 24 hours after starting the Terramycin. The chicken can see out of the eye, and can close its lid completely to keep the tissue moist. I plan to continue the Terramycin ointment for 14 days. Should I also give oral antibiotic? I have permanently separated bantams from larger chickens in case this was sinusitis from being pecked. That dominant pecky barred rock hen came from a sexed poulet bin at Tractor Supply. She has a lot of red on her head and crows a bit at 2 months age. I still hope it gives me eggs in 3 months. Here is her/his picture: the last photo is the silkie's eye after 48 hours of the Terramycin ointment 4 times a day.
