I'm not sure. I know nothing about turkeys. Just sent them an email letting them know I had an empty coop they were welcome to.

I didn't watch the video, but I read the article. I'd agree with Deerman on this one. I'm sorry they were treated in such a terrible fashion and I feel very bad for them, but those who are fit for consumption, should be humanely processed at this point. On the other hand, how many of these turkeys are sick with something? And if they are transported to other farms, how many of them could get other birds sick? I don't know how well they would take to socializing with humans or other turkeys/critters and the experience of relocating and having to deal with this odd social situation may make them even more scared/confused and stressed. A topic that comes up frequently in the meat section of the forum is people wanting to keep Cornish X chickens past their processing date to be kept as layers or pets. Many try, but the chickens are bred to get HUGE. Eventually, they can't stand or have several other health issues. These turkeys were bred to be the same way.

Whoever adopts these turkeys will have to be prepared at some point to euthanize them in the event that they are suffering because of their potential size.

My heart goes out to these animals and to those who are trying to help.

Oh yes i thimk its a great idea to help.....shows EM you. are a very caring person.....i just want people to know the facts of the breed. These toms will get over 50 lbs. Lot of weight for small legs.

A few toms could.be save to be milked....but even those dont live much over a year

I don't think they want to save them to live out long turkey lives...but it wouldn't be bad to let them live the remainder of their lives cruelty free. I don't like turkeys...but I don't like to see anything mistreated...not even evil, lazer beam eyed turkeys.

Still believe sent them all to freezer camp. Donate to the food banks.

I have to say that this sounds like a good idea given the breed.

Personally, I hope that is the solution. Trust me...feeding those things every day? Not Em's idea of a good time.

but,if they do need a place to "hang" for awhile...the coop is open. I blame Gritty...She talked me into it.

I really do dislike turkeys. I have had a lot of people ask if it's a real fear or if I just play like I'm this crazy on BYC. Fact is, they terrify me. They attack me every time I get around one without exception. (Well, ok, SirBird's turkeys didn't attack, but they were planning on it.) I really dislike them. But, I also think any animal, whether it is destined for the table or not, deserves a decent life beforehand. I personally think many animal welfare groups are insane. I don't associate with them at all, and most of the time, I don't agree with them either. I do hope these guys live out the rest of their lives with some dignity. No matter how short those lives end up being. If they need my help and support to do so, well, they do have it. Lazer beam eyes and all.

...I do believe it involves a bow tie and some spats.
