I have a chick who is about a month old now. Yesterday evening I found him with a matted left eye. My first thought was a pecking injury so I separated him and applied a warm compress to his eye. This morning his left and right eye both are matted and very swollen. I’m also noticing him acting like he’s trying to swallow something occasionally with an occasional gasp. Could it be related to a respiratory issue, or eye worms? Any thoughts and advice on treatment is highly appreciated!

I don't know how to help, I hope it gets better and that someone more knowledgeable is able to help.

Is there discharge from its nose or eyes?
Is it able to eat and drink?
Is there any other symptoms?
How many other chicks are there and how much room do they have?
What kind of bedding do they have?
Is its poop normal?

This looks like a mild respiratory infection such as MG (Mycoplasma Gallisepticum) to me, but it also could be something like Infectious Coryza or Infectious Bronchitis (IBV).

Have these chicks been around your other birds at all?

Where did you get them?

You can use Terramycin eye ointment to help with the eyes, but they’ll need antibiotics to treat the respiratory symptoms. You can read and learn more about these infections here:
