It’s undeveloped but fertile-“ she panted, rolling out the smooth blue egg to show Sparrow. “And I’m starting a clutch, so I was thinking I would hatch it with mine. Can I do that? Is that bad? Oh, and if you can’t tell, I’m in the throes of producing one of my own eggs and it really hurts. I just need your advice.” Her words tumbled out. She panted and her body contracted again.

Sparrow stared at her in shock.

Fang's neck feathers flew up as she could see the figure of another bird approaching. Climbing partially up the tree, she watched as the bird came into view.

Fern took a deep breath as her own egg passed. She rolled it underneath her. It’s creamy shell was glossier than the blue egg, and it had little speckles on the top. A fine job, she thought.
She looked back at the dumbfounded Sparrow.
