EZ Plucker 131 works GREAT!

Ya for sure people should see a commercial processing plant and how it works. I worked at a turkey processing plant but about 4 times a month we got loads of used up laying hens and they looked so horrible that nobody would want to eat them if they saw them, but when all the skin is off and the the breast meat is packaged up and the rest is used for who knows. I didn't work in packaging. I worked in the bloody area, gutting and cleaning. Then they sell the breast meat for top dollar. If people only knew. those nice little packages of skinless chicken breast you buy.....

Those poor laying hens are all bruised and beat up when they get to the plant. Totally look exhausted from all the eggs they've laid in their short lives.
And then the worst insult of all: They put a label on the package with a picture of a pretty little idyllic farm with rolling pastures.

Lol, ya really. Society is not as stupid as they used to be. They're starting to wake up. These big industries are not gonna be able to pull the wool over peoples eyes much longer. The industries are so big that thats why these bird flues and other diseases are popping up. they can't keep somthing that is that large and works that fast nice and clean. All they care about is the production each day and the money they can pull in. Same as the cattle feedlots. Ewwwww now thats really disgusting. cattle walking around knee high in their own feces til slaughter time. Man oh man its downright evil.

Well I've got my little flock and I know how many I can handle to keep them healthy and happy. I've got 32 meat birds, I'll sell a couple to friends and give a couple to family members. The same as my laying birds. Sell some eggs and keep some for us. Just think if more people did that. Now in the cities they're letting people have a few in their back yards. Yayyy. Why not let people raise some of their own food. Who says you have to buy all your food from the Grocery store.

Yukonchick, I'm with you. It's a huge problem, and I can't solve it by myself. But my motto is this: I can't do everything, but I can do something. Raise a few chickens, plant a garden, make some smarter choices at the grocery store -- the only way we'll ever effect a change is to vote with our DOLLARS. If there's no demand for feedlot and broilerhouse crap, maybe they'll stop producing it.

For sure. We just have to keep spreading the word on all unhealthy food that is sold on the shelves. People gotta realize that they can't just take it with a grain of salt anymore. you know what we''ve all said.....YA I KNOW I SHOULDN'T EAT THEM MCNUGGETS OR FROOTLOOPS BUT OH WELL. All that crap is alot more serious to our bodies than we realize, especiallly when you're ingesting it over years and years. And don't get me started on Monsanto's genetically altered foods and pesticides. Downright scary.

Yukonchick, you're singing my song! Taking the words right out of my mouth. I recently saw a new brand of feed at a local feed store. So I wrote an email to the Big Gain Feed Company asking if their feed contained GMO's. You won't believe the response I got. I quote: Thank you for the question “does Big Gain Poultry feed contains any genetically modified ingredients or genetically engineered ingredients?”. Yes, some of our products may contain genetically modified ingredients or Genetically engineered ingredients. It is important to remember that all grain and soybean products are genetically-modified, as simple plant breeding is a form of genetic modification."

I wrote back, in part, by saying this: A plant genetically programmed to produce its own pesticide is not “simple plant breeding” as there are no plants in the natural world that have this characteristic.

Has this poor person ever heard of einkorn wheat, emmer wheat, kamut, spelt, or non-gmo corn varieities whose genetics remain virtually unchaged since the beginning of time? Do they really think ALL GRAIN is genetically modified? I didn't know where to begin!

It made my day to read your post and realize that at least one other person on the planet is questioning the aisles and aisles full of GMO foods lining our grocery store aisles. GMO corn syrup is one of the first ingredients comprising non-organic infant formula. Great, Bt pesticide for baby's first food. It's unreal. I hope you are right that people are slowly waking up to the reality. Anyone curious or doubtful about the danger of GMO's should check out this website for good straightforward information:

P.S. Yukonchick, I don't care if this thread veers off on GMO's. It's my number one concern and the very reason I raise my own chicken in the first place!!!

Did anyone know that they have actually taking a gene from a fish that swims in deep depths and they have inserted that gene into the genetic code of a tomato so that it has a longer shelf life. Is that wrong or what?? And what about that cat That glows in the dark because it has a gene from from glow worms. whats the purpose of that.?? Sheesh. they're messing in dangerous territory. Have you noticed that everyyones teenage kids are way taller than their parents these days?? Is that evolution or whatever is fed to the beef and chicken???

And their feet are huge! I tried to give away my adult size ski boots at my kids' grade school, and I had to go way down to like 4th grade to find someone whose foot was small enough to fit my boots! (Not to mention other body parts which are also larger. . .)

So what about seeds then? I am planning a decent sized garden for next year and I will need seeds. Is this a concern with the seed companies? I don't have room to grow my own meats - but I do support the local farmer at the All Local Farmer's markets in my area. Everything just tastes better IMO. If I ever do get a farm (when I should say) I would like to get into meat birds. I usually don't eat the skin - so I would probably just skin the darn things instead of worrying about plucking.
