Facebook users - does anyone else play "Farm Town"?

OK silly question - what is the point of having the farm animals, buildings, paths, & such? Do they *do* anything?

Can you harvest your neighbors crop if it is ready and they are not on FB? Or do you have to wait until they are on and grant you permission?
