FAIL ... 8 Stiches

This is so much easier with nail guns today. Using a hammer, I just flatten mine occasionally. Not intentionally, mind you.
Yes, it was a nail gun. It happened because he was helping our son fire a nail but our son held the trigger a little bit too long so it fired another nail and my husband had his hand in a bad place. He didn't even tell me until he got it pulled out and everything.

What a man!
Reminds me of when they kids got hurt. "they'll be fine", I said. "Get in the @# truck. we are going to the emergency room", she said through gritted teeth.

They lived. I was right.

LOL. My DH wouldn’t dare tell me the kids will be fine but when it comes to himself it was always mums the word until…
he swung a 12in bar chainsaw onto his buckstrap a little too quickly (professional tree trimmer) and into his leg—juuust missed a tendon thankfully. He called me from the hosp (where I work) asking when his last tetanus shot was :old

Oh wow! Sometimes our brains tell us one thing and our bodies to the opposite. You must have just missed the tendon. Hope you heal up well.

Exactly what happened!

That's what the PA said (about the tendon) too.
Why I couldn't have cut a straight line?

I'm a bit of a germaphobe (not as bad as I once was, animals help me) so I've got to wash my hands frequently and the bandages keep getting wet.
I switched to XXL band-aids that I can tent over the top. But even the waterproof ones are not surviving a little bit of splatter.

Otherwise, it seems ok, not hurting as long as I don't overuse it. But these stitches aren't coming out on day 7. There's still a considerable gap.

I told the ER nurse that I saw the white of bone and while still surprised at what happened, I thought the wound was too open to apply pressure so I grabbed both sides and smushed it back together.
She told me not to worry, that the white was just fat. Now I wonder if she thought I was only talking about white under the skin rather than white under the red flesh?

Surely while having me bend it they got a good look in there? But it never came apart again the way it was when it first happened.
So now I can't straighten my thumb without help from the other fingers. No pain, just wants to be half bent. I thought at first it must be from the swelling, but that's gone down. Still a bit numb on the end.

I have to wait till the 30th for my appointment with my new PCP so I can't even ask anyone. They can't take the stitches out there either (no tools). Mom offered to do it with her sewing snippers (I declined :p).

Try using a nitrile glove over that hand. If you can't handle having a glove over your whole hand, try cutting just the other fingers off of it. You need to try really hard not to get those stitches wet. The glove may help. 😁

Glad you're not in pain!

Here’s some basic pro advice: Keep it clean and dry, don’t go out of your way in bending your thumb too much; sutures are very strong but they can and will pop under enough tension. If that happens there is no such thing as safely re-suturing because the risk of infection is simply too high, therefore you will be in for a long long healing time. After sutures are out inquire about physical therapy.. this is your thumb we’re talking about. At the least ask about home exercises you can do to lessen the chance of any potential mobility restriction as scar tissue matures.
Be smart about your activity for a few days. Elevate to reduce swelling, may use ice if it feels tender but not directly on skin. Don’t splint or ACE wrap your thumb or wrist—not needed and can cause issues later. Follow instructions from ED regarding pain meds, if needed at all, until you see your new PCP.
Agree with @Overo Mare about nitrile glove use whenever working around animals, their waste and even their waterers. Or doing your home dishes.
Sutures in high-tension areas such as yours typically remain in place for 10-days. Let the professional take them out. Watching a wound ‘unzip’ itself, as you can imaging, does not make for a joyful rest of the day.
Good luck! 👍
