I had a cocci outbreak last week. I lost 4 birds.

I thought for sure I was losing another but he is still hanging in there.
I brought him inside.
He eats and drinks a little. poops a little.
But no energy to do anything.
Sometimes he refuses to stand. Like when he falls over he just lays there.
I am giving him gamebird feed to up the %. He is still on the medicated water.
Won't touch egg or any other treats. Took him outside yesterday with the others.
He was happy about that, pecked at the grass a little.
But by the evening he was not staying with the group. Just standing there and calling for the others.
Put him in with the others last night just hoping that he would come around.
This morning we thought he was at deaths door. Brought him back inside. He is back to standing on his own. Ate some, drank, pooped. Very quiet.
If you go to pick him up he doesn't struggle or move at all.

So what can I do for the fella?
He is a standard EE. It was hard enough loosing the 4 hens.

I would keep him inside for a few days. You can offer cut up grass, since he eats that. He may still be trying to recover and not able to keep up w/the others, so I'd let him regain his strength in a warm environment.

i hope he gets better soon. are you also putting vitamins in his water? i've had good luck with vita-flight (which you can buy at many pet stores). keep doing what you're doing...sound like you have it covered.

best, lynn

My dad's EE was just like that. He had severe cocci and it
did take him two months to recover. We had to carry
him around in two different hats (one to wash while using the other).
At least 10 times I had counted him a goner. I had to hand feed him
4x a day since he wouldn't eat.

He still will follow us around the property wanting to be carried.

He grew out very slowly but, finally now he looks like a rooster.
Recovery was slow...I will always use medicated chick feed after that.

Good luck.

We used medicated until they moved outside at 8.5 weeks.
I will pick up some vitamins tomorrow. I didn't add anything since I was trying different treats.

I had to cull him this morning.
He just kept going down hill.
That was the hardest thing I had to do.

I was trying to talk myself out of it even though I knew it was the right thing. I couldn't prolong the suffering to himself and myself.
Even after he was gone it was OMG what did I do! Is he still alive. I know it was quick and over. But those twiching movements. It breaks my heart.
