Fair Price For 18 Wk Old Roosters

His kids are going with their mom to kentuky next week... hubby and the neighbor have it all set up for them process them in our yard.

I am even going as far as gifting him 2 laying hens and I think he's going still help process when his kids are gone... but we're going to keep all the meat.

Which is fine, I'm trading off 2 birds I don't need or want anymore anyways.

I heard from a sales lady at Ideal that the prices in Indiania are $45 each for a laying hen

I really think if the economy gets worse... people with chickens can barter to survive!!!!

Yes you should only be so kind as to relieve him of them. People who don't want roosters will eventually beg somebody to take them. I know first hand.

I hope prices don't go up. I was wanting to get some more hens. I have RIR's now and want some that lay white eggs. Of course I better check with the health food store and see how her white egg market is. She takes all the brown eggs I can bring her. Especially since her two biggest suppliers were wiped out by coyotes last month.

My two spare 6 month old EE free range roosters were invited to Christmas Dinner by a co-worker. No money exchanged hands, just good will of the season! I do hope there was enough meat on them to make them worthwhile. She was looking forward to free range chicken soup.
I have tried to give young roosters away on Craiglist and worry about cockfighting groups in some areas locally. I don't mind free soup, but I will not contribute in any way to entertainment of that sort.
OT... at what age do the roosters get too tough to be edible?

I gave a bunch of my roosters away on craigslist. The family that came and got them had a cricket problem. Said they were all over their yard and you couldn't even walk out in it without crunching them and getting them all over your shoes. They came back the next week and got the roos that were left and said that the chickens were helping with the cricket problem a great deal.

If you're wanting to get rid of roosters, you can do it a few ways:

Sell it cheap as meat - there are some ethnic groups who will pay some for them. ($free-$5)

Give them away for free!

Or do as I do... I sell a hen but the rooster MUST be taken with her! lol

I can typically sell my roosters for $5-$10 each; but mine are so friendly and nearly NEVER crow!

People sometimes want those kind of roosters for their flock!

Eat them
