Fair Price for 2 yr old laying hens?

Folks have eagerly paid me $15. per hen. These are my own strain of hardy free-rangers. Heck, I've had folks drive miles just to buy roosters for breeding and again, these are my own strain. I guess it all depends on locale.

Personally I'd only ask $1, if that. Since it's your neighbor and it sounds like you help eachother out it would be paying it forward to help them out and people don't forget an act of kindness. If you are selling them for profit thats one thing.

I didn't realize that you were from WI too. I know here for a fact that older hens go for about $5 each. Even at auction in Amherst!

I agree with aussieheelr. A 2-year-old hen is on the waning edge of laying and the 5-7 eggs a day you are getting now is likely to be fewer in the near future. You want to maintain good neighborly relations and get a deal on the home-grown pork, so it wouldn't be prudent to ask for too much for the hens and have your neighbor end up unhappy that come Spring he or she is paying to feed a bunch of birds who are barely producing any more.
