My husband and I like being more self-sustaining. We have a huge garden, fruit trees, burn wood and eat a lot of Venison. We have been talking about getting chickens for a couple of years and were going to wait until we retire in about 3-4 years. This Spring we were looking at the baby chicks (like I always do with a sad forlorn look on my face :) ) and he said why not just get them.

We did a bunch of research for the following week watching a lot of videos and reading many posts to get ourselves ready. We got 9 Australorps on March 10th and then bought 4 Silkies for the granddaughters on April 14th. The Australorps were pullets and the Silkies were straight run. We are still trying to figure out if we got one or 2 Roosters out of the 4 Silkies. We started getting eggs from 1 hen about 2 weeks ago and now we have 3 hens laying. 2 are laying smaller eggs and 1 is close to being full size.

We have an automatic door that opens in the daylight and closes at night and we allow our chickens to free range all day long. Only drawback is they are eating off the corn cobs so we may not put up as much corn as we expected.

We also have 3 dogs, 2 cats and 6 Honey Bee Hives (gotta love fresh Honey, it's the best!!). 4 kids that are all grown up and on their own and 3 grandkids.

I have a friend who was on this site and finally had time to join. It's great hearing other peoples ideas of what has and what has not worked on different things.
