fake eggs

I'm wondering if I can just leave the eggs in the nesting boxes to encourage their use(marking them for identification of course) Unsure why people are going out to purchase fake eggs--Is there something the hens don't like about the old eggs being there?

I like to use fake eggs because the real eggs get rotten and may burst, making the new eggs unusable in my opinion.
Some hens will stay away from rotten eggs and find a new place to lay their eggs.Kinda defeats the purpose.
Also, marks may get worn off and if I happen to crack that old egg for DH's breakfast....well...YUCK!!!!

Bursting rotten eggs sounds like a good reason not to leave them!

I don't believe in the golf ball thing--maybe I just hate to think my girls are that easily deluded. Where does one find "real" fake eggs?

my feed store carrys ceramic eggs. You might ask yours if they can order some for you, or you can order your own. I don't have a link to them at this moment, but you could google them.

I use golf balls.

I put golf balls in our nest boxes when the gals turned 18 weeks old. Our Banty Mottled Cochins began laying a week and a half later. Funny thing is that their eggs are about the same size and dimension as the golf balls.

We have a couple of ceramic eggs that the hens move from nest to nest. Sometimes they lay on top of the fakes, and sometimes they roll the fakes to another box. The other day, they rolled one clear out onto the floor.

For whatever reason, we also collect more eggs from our two end boxes than the center ones. Could be a privacy issue.
