Ok all,

I got in touch with the TSC (Irmo) yesterday and they weren't too keen on the Chicken Swap. The manager said that with the recent outbreak with salmonella in back yard chicken farms, that they were unsure if they'd want to host such a swap. I did my best to plead our case and I at least got her to speak with her manager (running it up the flag pole) about it before she said no. This person is on vacation and won't be back until Sunday, so we should know something next week.

All this said, I'll be quite honest...I'm new in the chicken business and am very much an amateur, so besides repeating what you guys have said on here about chicken diseases (that they can really be anywhere and from anyone that walks in their store), I probably didn't do the best job of pleading our case just because I'm not as informed as I should be. I guess we should wait and see what they say next week and then maybe someone much more informed than me can maybe call and speak on our behalf.

You're kidding!! . . . . Sounds like you did a fine job explaining. You're right an infected farmer can carry it in the TSC on his shoe and I can come along behind him and pick it up and carry it home. I do have chicken boots that I only wear in "my" chicken areas to keep from carry anything in on my shoes. It's there right because they can't stop people from coming to their store. I had not heard of any chicken diseases going around in my area and I'm registered - Is it just in the Columbia Area?

That sucks but maybe they'll come around. Brandy, I'm sure u did fine. I mean the store could already have disease...although I seriously doubt it.

And you know, it's not like we'd have birds in the frickin' store...we'd be in the parking lot like last time. They should be happy because we are practically bringing them potential customers! OK...I'm done

Betsy, if there is an outbreak of salm. I haven't heard anything about it...but then again, I'm 45 mins from Cola, so at least on my side of SC there are no problems I'm aware of.

Any other potentials?? Just in case we have to move it?

I really have no idea what she was talking about...and I'm not so sure that she knew what she was talking about either. It was two amateurs trying to make big chicken talk. HA! Anyway, I guess we will wait and see what this other "manager" has to say. I, personally, haven't had any problems and none of the locals (that I talk with) have said anything about problems/diseases either. But most of the discussions I have with chicken people go like this: "My, that bird has a beautiful color." and not this: "So, what diseases have been in your flock this year."...Its the amateur in me, I guess.

Also, I'll be sure to mention that many of us likely spend a good bit of money feeding our chickens from these TSC stores throughout the state...we'll see what they say.

I just spoke with Laurel and Tara at TSC Irmo and they both said that it'd be great to have the swap on August 6th. They need to know about how many people will be selling/swapping and they will set aside a section of the parking lot for us (complete with tents) or even a space inside (NICE!). They want us to have a flyer and they will put it on their door and at their counter for people to take. Also, they wanted to know a time....I told them it'd probably be morning thru lunchtime, but I'd ask and let them know.

Great!!

I'll have to drive an hour and a half so let's not do it too early unless it's supposed to be hot. I can do the flyer and email it to ya Brandy once we decide times.
