Be careful of slippery surfaces. It can deform their little legs. make sure you have some traction down then the bedding on top. I have mine in a dog crate with a cheep Ikea cotton rug .
It keeps them warm (it is below 70 now) and easy to shake out or launder. A friend has the rubber cabinet liner down. Equally easy to clean off, but way more expensive. (and not absorbent if the water spills.

do you think a simple brooders lamp and good shelter could keep five chicks warm (including water and feed and hay for bedding in the shelter)?

Yes, as long as the temp under lamp is about 95 and temp dropped by 5 degrees each week until feathered out. I raised my first 6 with one brooder lamp with a 250W bulb. I have 3 new ones I just moved out of the brooder today into the grow-out tractor. It has a 150W heat lamp in it on timer since it is getting into the upper 30's where I live at night.

thanks that helps a whole lot

Yes the 250 or 150 watt bulb is good and starting at 95 degrees, but also watch your chicks, if they are spread out not under the light and not touching each other you need to decrease heat if huddle tight together under the light you need to increase heat. Those chicks are your best indicators of what the temp should be. I have 10 chicks that will be 3 weeks tuesday and they are at 75 degrees. They all will be different
