Fall chick raising

do you think a simple brooders lamp and good shelter could keep five chicks warm (including water and feed and hay for bedding in the shelter)?

If the chicks are under a broody hen I don't see why you would need lights or any heat. I have chicks that are just a little older than these pictured and they are doing fine. On the colder days I just haven't let them out. By colder I'm talking about 20° F I think we even had over night temps into the teens. By the time the real cold hits they should be big enough to handle the cold in a draft free coop. My chicks are now in with the coop with the chickens.

Beautiful chicks :)

They will be 4 weeks old tomorrow - it has been cold! Down in the 30's at night and today we have 2 inches of snow LOL. Hoping it is just an early storm and we will still get some nice weather before the real winter hits!

Cornish Rock meat chickens from Ideal Poultry. We didn't mind the snow today, but I am sure I will be whistling a different tune in a few months LOL.

Thats right.. Yea mine are from Ideal too. Yea the only time I dont mind snow is xmas. Then it can just go away for all I care..

I had a BR broody hen hatch two eggs. My 2 (4 Wk olds ) are roosting with the big girls at night! looks pretty funny . For their own safety they can hide in the cage when the hens are around. The openings are too small for the big hens. the chicks fit but are starting to get too fat . Momma gave up on them a while back. They are BO eggs(from another coop) mixed with a RIR or a BR something (pic below). I wonder if the larger dark one is a Roo!

My chicks will be 4 weeks on tuesday, they have spent some time outside but not roosting with the others yet, I have turkeys who would crush them so they will have to wait. They are almost fully feathered though they are doing great with that. Cant wait to get them set up outside were they belong, I am just afraid it is too cold for them right now.

Just need to feather out the head and we are on a roll..

These two will be 5 weeks Monday the yellow one could use a few more feathers. I have a light for the coop when it gets below 55 or so i turn it on..so they have the option to sit under the light.. I have a Digital thermometer in the coop at floor level- wireless receiver in my kitchen. I'm keeping close eye on temps because of freeze warnings this week and I'm still new at this. They don't always roost. Currently they are sitting on the cold end 54 . I never would have placed my first batch out there, but these two hatched in the cold coop (no lamp)with the mom and seem to be use to it. gonna keep close watch tonight and see if they act cold. I figure if they were cold they would peep or huddle up or something.

cute chicks what breed is the 2nd one?

Yes if they were cold tehy would make lots of noise and huddle as close together as possible under the light. Seems like they are fine.
The second chick is a dark brahma. I love brahmas I have a buff bantam brahma and a standard buff brahma, Just got these guys and I am working on others.
