Falling off roost while sleeping

so far all other ladies fine! my daughter wants an autopsy....idk about that after seeing the cost, thinking of doing myself - to see if we can find anything, but honestly probably waste of time since i really hadnt a clue what to look for....idk....i am very sad though she was by FAR the nicest chicken we had, she would always fly into your lap and nudge ya with her little head till you pet her! cant imagine there is another like her!

I do my own post mortem examinations and have found the cause in many cases. If you decide to go that route, take plenty of photos as you go along of what you see both externally and internally, as there are a few of us on BYC who have a bit of experience at this now and we may be able to spot abnormalities and help you figure it out.

Sadly it is all too often the favourites that die young.

Sorry to hear about your chicken.
I'm a complete newbie, but we lost a chicken this summer, our first year of having chickens. She was a Cochin, also so sweet. It was summertime and warm, but she never went inside at dusk as usual and everyone else did. We put her in, she could not hold onto the roost. We took her inside our house to keep an eye on her and in case it was an illness. She made it through the night, but was very weak and unable to stand up , so we took her to an avian vet. Cost a fortune. the result was a slight overgrowth of bacteria in her stool. Gave her anti-biotics for 5 days, but then she died. We think it was botulism, as she had all the symptoms. Everyone else was fine. Hopefully your other chickens will be fine too.

was going to do the autopsy, but....the snow came, with the cold...so with the predators and the unkown reason behind her death, we opted for cremation.. other ladies are doing well...all but the iowa blue hate the snow - i found this surprising for she is the smallest and least fluffy of the bunch!

One of mine did this last night. I have a chicken cam in there (yeah, nerd) and so I looked and she just slipped and fell. I went out and helped her back up, and she was fine and seems fine today. I think that she just couldn't see well enough to jump back up.
