Fanciful Frigid Fall Hatch-Along

Pics
Good morning Fall Egglets! Let's all get our Autumn on! 🍁 🍂

Fall Season Love GIF by BrittDoesDesign

We wanted one last hoorah as we go into the autumn and stop hatching until next spring. Most likely. Probably. (My husband is an enabler. We're building more coops, got an extra new brooder... 🤭)
The naming theme is Fall/Autumn or Winter themed. (Avalanche, Flurry, Pumpkin, Samhain, Leaf, Chestnut, Eggnog, Turkey, etc.) So there's a very wide variety of possible names here!
1-2 claims a person for now to cheer on/name so there's plenty of chances in case folks join the hatchalong late please! If we get further along and there's ones without names, I'll definitely let people suggest/claim additional ones, especially if their egg didn't develop or they hadn't joined previously. I love seeing everyone's ideas!

So what do we have in these eggs? Another fun variety!
We've got Sumatras, Seramas, and Silkies! Wahoo! The Seramas and Silkies could be a huge variety of colors. Sumatras will be Blue/Black/Splash! None have been candled yet of course, so fingers crossed we get a good turnout. The Seramas were in the mail for 7 days, so I'm a LITTLE nervous about how they'll do, but we're trying regardless! As for the Silkies... one simply does not get a buy 12 get 12 free deal and not take it. 🤭

Forgive all the pics. Since some had already started to incubate, I didn't want to pull them out long enough to organize. :gig

Batch A: Set 8/6, lockdown 8/21, hatch date 8/24
Batch B: Set 8/7, lockdown late 8/21, hatch date 8/24
^ (These are the Seramas so I'm giving an extra day for lockdown JUST in case) ^
Batch C: Set 8/9, lockdown 8/27, hatch date 8/30
Color marks: Batch A is purple + red, Batch B is no color/black, Batch C is blue.

The Sumatras are extra important to us. Kiddo had fallen in love with a chick who just was not growing, a black Sumatra. At a month old, he'd only grown some of his wing feathers in. Despite the vitamin regiments, extra quality food, and private feeding sessions curled up warm to make sure his crop never went empty, he passed away at a little over a month old. Kiddo was devastated to lose "Oreo." He has been so very responsible with the chickens. He's helped feed them, collect eggs (well, the daily egg), he's helped alert me when one's in need of medical attention if he notices before I do (rare that we have that issue, but it's so wonderful he keeps an eye out), he's helped change the brooders and coops, and has even helped us build our huge coops without complaining. He asked if we could get "another Sumatra" because he missed Oreo. I ran to find Sumatra eggs, and found a breeder who keeps show quality Sumatras and clearly loves his birds. It was a win-win, as we want to do our best to support breeders now that we're another foot into our chicken journey, especially ones that clearly care about their chickens and them getting the best of care. I was able to secure them, and they got here quickly and with lots of extras! So our hope is that we get at least a few of these to hatch, especially a black one, so kiddo can have "his very own" Sumatra to love on and potentially even take to shows if he gets interested.

Thanks for joining! 💙
Hi! I’d LOVE to claim #21 & #22 Serama Blackjack and Buster! I’m incubating 12 Serama eggs for my first time ever! My Serama eggs were shipped from CA to TX and USPS set mine to Chicago where they sat for the weekend before arriving at my local post office and I picked them up Tuesday morning. Packaged perfectly pointed sides down and individually bubble wrapped within egg crates with pine shavings inside and outside of the containers
. Candled for any cracks in shipping and nothing was seen, let them settle down while I setup the incubator and I put them in at noon on 08/12/25! 100 temperature and humidity has been 48-52% for the entire time thus far. If you have any suggestions tips instructions Please let me know if I’m doing anything wrong or if I’ve already done anything wrong or anything I can do from this point on to help make the hatching process more successful! I’m hoping for 2 any more than that will be OUTSTANDING!
Here’s to hoping you have a GREAT hatch out ! ✌🏼🫶🏼🤞🏼🐣🙏🏼

You sure may! I'll update the first post! :D

Please keep us updated! I myself sadly don't know what I'm doing still. LOL. My incubator is forced air and running it at 100 seemed to hatch the chicks a bit early, but I know that's closer to the safe sized for non-fan incubators. I think. I only started hatching a couple months ago tops! It's a journey of learning, but it's so far been a wonderful one!

I think candling two to three times during development (7 or 10 days, 18 days before lockdown to make sure to pull any quitters) to take a peek at everyone is helpful for me. Super smart to check for cracks after receiving them! I found one that was sooo full of hairline cracks I just couldn't see when holding it without candling. I ended up GENTLY placing it on a paper towel and it shattered on the spot. Better there than in an incubator. :lau

I sometimes do a second at about 14 days to early pull quitters. It helps give a good visual on how the air cells are progressing. Some breeds and even individual eggs are/have more porous shells than others, so it can affect how the humidity hits 'em from my research! Hatching shipped eggs can be a coin toss. I've spoken with folks who had a 100% hatch rate from a seller, then a closer to 15% from the same seller before. No changes in diet for the parent stock or anything like that, just the risk of shipping! The lovely folks here have helped me be less hard on myself. All things chicken have been a learning curve for us. Definitely post a thread if you've got any questions that arise while candling/incubating. My questions have always been answered promptly and kindly by the wonderful folks here. 🥰 Wishing the VERY best hatch rate for your Seramas, and would love to be updated as it progresses!
