Fantastic Treat And Money Question

as for the farmers market be sure to check with the sellers, here in Eugene they keep a big tub of carrot tops and mashed berries and other bits behind their table and if you ask they will let you help yourself to whatever is there, be sure to bring your own bag so that you don't impose on them, since most of what you get would just be composted they are happy to give it away since they ususlly have enough compost as it is and if you take it they don't have to lug it home - last Saturday my babies got about a dozen HUGE strawberries (that I cut up so everyone would get some) and the usual carrot tops (that they love) plus various baby greens and some small carrots and radishes that I grate with a cheese grater for them. yum, they always know when I have treats and come running.

Why buy things for your chickens when you can get things for free?

My local veggie stand piles things behind the store for people to take home for animals. I've gotten pumpkins, tomatoes, corn, watermelons, lettuce, and more.

My crab apple tree's fruit is too small for people to bother with... but the chickens love the fermented fruit.

My neighbors have a massive grape arbor but the grapes are too sour to eat. My banty cochin once ate 32 grapes in 1 sitting. DBF is STILL in awe!!

mine love sweetcorn. Theyre a bit spoiled really, we usually give them some every morning for breakfast before we put the grain out for them, & some mornings if we dont have sweetcorn they sulk & dont want to eat the grain.

They also love mackeral in tomato sauce.

Gave my girls a sliced up yellow squash Wednesday, they did not like it.

Had grits & sausage for supper last nite, gave them the leftover grits this morning. I just knew they would love them, well they thought they were awful.

Cooked extra spaghetti noodles for them today and they fought over them.

So funny running around the run with noodles in their mouths.

Mine love spaghetti noodles too. And it so funny to watch. The produce manager at a local store saves all sorts of trimmings for me. He knows they prefer organic
