Farm chatter

Spring dreaming here. First winter with chickens so I am afraid to get anything younger than what I have (8 at 25 weeks) but have my plans for a 2nd coop, combined run and CHICKS.

We just fixed our barn door so I don't have to throw out a shoulder when opening and closing in the winter.

We have to re-do the roof at 2 spots on our old 1920 farm house, got the materials but with 5 of 7 days showing rain this week, it will have to wait....

First winter with chickens
The first winter is... learning, lots of learning. Here's what I learned:

--It's COLD in the morning. Doesn't matter. Get thyself going!
--Get a heated water bowl, or other way to keep water in liquid form. Believe me, the $$ spent are worth it!
--A solid roof over the run is worth it. Going to upgrade ours this year.
--Wrap some kind of barrier around the prevailing wind side(s) of the run to block the wind and snow. Clear shower curtains will work, they're pretty cheap, and I'll be able to use mine for a second year. But I'll probably build something next year that's better.
--Ventilation, ventilation, ventilation. Sit in the coop and watch the chickens' breath steam rise. It has to go somewhere. Fortunately, mine did, but I am even more of a believer in good ventilation now that I've seen it in action.

Lookieeeeee!!! Praise the Lord!!!
