Farm chatter

I've started a feather collection.

I filled some little buckets with sand and stuck the feathers in them. Also have these:

The majority are peacock feathers, which are the fluffy ones and the large brown one. The skinny grey ones are from a lav orp, and the little fluffy ones with a bit of red are from my RSLs.
The blue ones are beautiful in the light.

You can also see my cut finger from where I almost chopped it off.

I got a beautiful feather today. I keep my feathers behind my phone case for when I go on trips I can look at them and think of my chickens lol. I should’ve kept this one, it’s from my poor quality BR but it’s beautiful! I’m hoping to breed some that have more feathers like this because it’s just beautiful!View attachment 2421653View attachment 2421654
Did you say poor quality!!!!! That is some of the cleanest barring I've ever seen!! Putting feathers behind a phone case is a great idea. Wish I had a phone.

Me too, I’ve never seen such good barring in a hatchery bird than hers. She’s poor quality because she has black feathers, I wish I had a BR rooster so I could breed just barring to her so that have no black feathers. For now I may breed her with my only non-muffed/bearded rooster, a lavender Orpington and make some nicely barred sex link males.

That sounds like a great idea.

But I just love the way the black/barring feather looks so I also wanna make some that look like that. I also may breed this black ameraucana/cuckoo maran mix to her so I can make some bearded/muffed chicken with barring. He doesn’t have good cuckoo color though so I guess I will just have to see how bad it effects the barring. I will get updated photos tomorrow. He’s 2 months. I’m guessing that when he's mature she will finally be laying.
