how do you know when an egg is stuck or the hen needs help?
An egg bound hen usually spends lots of time by herself, in a nest box or in a dark corner, or perhaps somewhere other birds will not bother her. She will appear sick, tail droopy, head and body tucked in, and probably will not be eating/drinking/pooping. You can feel an egg shaped lump too. Usually an extra boost in calcium and Epsom salt baths can help her to pass it, along with providing a dark and quiet place to lay.

Interesting! I don’t think we have that sort of thing here
I bet you do....

It’s everywhere! Worldwide. I’m sure you have tons! There’s more info here on this site as well as an app you can download to find ones near you and I believe there is a geocaching thread here too that I saw earlier but haven’t joined yet.

Yay! I’m so glad you could help her. Today I had the exact same incident @jwehl had. My EE was all puffed up and she was hunched up like a raisin, and her vent was visible/abnormal looking. My brain exploded with all the possible egg laying issues and vent problems she could have, but turns out she was just pooping! :lau
My girl was sitting all ruffled, & butt pulsing rapidly. I have no idea how long she was like that. She certainly put up a fight over a pill.

My first incident was with my black Copper Marans, a few weeks ago. She was straining, but didn't have anyway to help her. I lacked an important supply for my Chicken First Aid Kit. Calcium Citrate Tablets.

A shell-less egg broke inside of her, but was lucky enough to expel the rest of the egg material over night.

Now I'm watching everyone closely.
