I THOUGHT THAT YOU HAD A MALINOIS
WAIT OK
YOU HAVE A LOT OF BELGIAN SHEPHERD BREEDS, RIGHT
WHICH ONE DO YOU LIKE BEST
AND IF IT'S NOT TOO MUCH OF A PAIN COULD YOU ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FOR THE DIFFERENT BELGIAN SHEPHERD BREEDS YOU HAVE
we have 3 terverens
and my mutt baby who is half terveren and half german shepherd
I LIKE MINE THE BEST BUT THATS BECAUSE HES MINE. :D

How often do you have to brush them, bathe them, take them to the groomer?
groomer?
-I pretty much bathe them never unless they get into something or need a flea bath. they do shed and you can make an entire 'nother dog shape with fur when you brush them haha. we don't brush them super often. just like... 3 times a year maybe when we notice chunks of fur are coming out. but brushing them prompts more hair to get lose so it's good to follow up a day or 2 later.

Are they impulsive?
-i dont know about impulsive.
they are SMART. the kind of smart where they wont be bad in front of you but might behind your back.
freya was getting granola bars FROM THE PANTRY SHELF to snack on because shes brilliant lmao. she will act appropriately sorry when you're disciplining her but will immediately be happy go lucky the second you stop.
ludo kills birds if they go into his yard when no one is watching him. but doesnt chase them outside his yard when we are around.
I don't think any of that actually addressed impulsive tho. can you give me an example?

Are they large or more meidum?
they are probably medium in body but they're fluffy so they look large. I think freya (female) is 55 lbs. the boys are larger. they definitely look like huge dogs to not-dog-people. v scary looking.

Are they vocal? If so, what is the pitch of their bark?
their bark is high pitched. I suspect you can find a video on yt to actually hear it. it is not the deep german shepherd bark. they are good alert dogs for sure. cadeyrn barks at everything but I think hes a little touched in the head (he had parvovirus as a puppy - not our fault). actually cadeyrn kinda used to just scream but hes gotten better.

Do they get on well with other people? Dogs? Are they outgoing or more reserved?
yes, yes. freya will demand every single person pet her. but on the flip side, if you are a stranger and walk into our house, she will bite you. and then if we tell hers its okay, that we know them, shell start demanding pets. cadeyrn and ludo are just happy and lovey. cadeyrns issue is that hes super vocal asking for affection. ludo wants to lick your face all day. and freya will literally nudge your hand up to make you pet her. benjen (half) on the other hand mostly only likes me and a few select people but he tolerates everyone. he doesnt snap at people who try to pet him but he does look at me like "mom do I have to?" and would rather be under my feet instead. but my SO has trained dogs for decades and says he has never seen one as neurotic as benjen šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

How energetic are they, on a scale of border collie (bonkers) to greyhound (mneh, pretty chill)?

I'm gunna answer the rest but I gotta do stuff brb

Impulsive meaning that they'll ignore your recall if there's something new moving in the bushes, or just try to take off running after something even on leash
It also sort of ties into other stuff- would they jump in the pool after you if they were already running, or would they pause to assess the situation? Also, are they patient? If you poke them the wrong way, will they immediately flip, or will they think first?

oh ok I didn't know that lol, glad I asked

you can absolutely train them well on recall and heel. they're basically long
haired malinois so they are definitely trainable to a high level. my SO had one that was so bonkers smart that he knew how to turn on the tub if he was hot and one day someone had left the bath plug in so it didnt drain and the dog woke him up and ran back and forth until he followed him to the bathroom. so I'd say you could teach them great recall and to stick close to you. if you get distracted for long enough, freya will go on adventures, but it's not like she bolts if you let her off leash. and they always come back lol. benjen sticks near me almost always unless hes off pooping or eating bird poop. šŸ˜… I dunno about the pool scenario. I suspect that's gonna be more dog specific. mine would run into a lake after me (doesn't mind water if his feet are touching the ground) but wouldn't jump in a pool. I suspect that could he trained to be fearless but I'm not sure what their default it. they do want to please their humans and pick up stuff pretty quickly that initially freaked them out if you talk them through it. mine (half) learned things I didnt even mean to teach him just by being corrected or instructed to do something a few times.

SO would say trained but I wasnt around when she was a puppy. definitely can be protective.

benjen (half) dislikes other dogs except freya. but he wont attack them. he just acts scary and does nothing. cadeyrn and ludo will come up to benjen and get in his personal space and he will growl and bar his teeth like a vicious & they'll lick him in the teeth and he does nothing. I think the rest are dog-friendly. benjen just wants his personal space.

they have energy for days if you want to hike or whatnot. I hiked 20 miles with benjen offleash and he ran around me a lot and played fetch at breaks and still didnt run out of energy. I'm not that kind of active person usually and we lay around a lot or I'll be pulling weeds and he will be laying nearby and he gets a little whiney which I'd assume means hed like more exercise but he isnt destructive

freya is lazy and got fat šŸ˜… shes better now though
benjen can run around in the yard without me but that's obviously not good enough because then hes not WITH ME. so he just sits at the door waiting for me to let him back in.
ludo and cadeyrn live in the yard so I assume they run around as much as they want.

I think there was something else I wanted to say but I forgot

1) Depends on if they are intact or not. Intact coats are very easy, until a female blows her coat before going into heat and than you have fur everywhere. Spay/neuter coats are thick and wooly, and require grooming up to every day depending on how bad it gets.
2) I wouldn’t say they’re super impulsive. They’re thinkers, which sometimes isn’t the best lol. If they think they know better than you that could be good or bad depending on the situation.
3) Very medium, you put them next to a German Shepherd and there is a significant size difference.
4) Typical herding dogs, they’re barky. Pitch depends on the individual and their mood. The dogs I’ve had tend towards a deeper pitch, but they can get obnoxiously high pitched if you aren’t throwing their ball fast enough lol
5) From the AKC standard ā€œIn his relationship with humans he is observant and vigilant with strangers, but not apprehensive. He does not show fear or shyness. He does not show viciousness by unwarranted or unprovoked attack. He must be approachable, standing his ground and showing confidence to meet overtures without himself making them. With those he knows well, he is most affectionate and friendly, zealous for their attention and very possessive.ā€ I’d say that sums it up well. The breed is somewhat notorious for nerviness though, and not in a good way. I’ve met plenty of dogs who meet the standard, but also quite a few who have less than stellar temperaments. There are few Golden temperaments out there, but they’re not typical. In terms of dogs I’ve observed that same sex aggression isn’t that uncommon. They can be jerks, and even the well tempered ones don’t enjoy dog park type situations.
6) They’re not Border Collie level energetic, but not that far off.
